Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew Make Series Regular E-mail

It's that time of year when Grey's announces cast additions. Last year, I was eagerly awaiting the news regarding JCap. This year, to no one's surprise, Jesse Williams and his universally-drooled-upon eyes have been upped to series regular. What is slightly more befuddling is Sarah Drew's promotion as well. This makes a total of 14 regulars. 14. The cast size is approaching reality competition show proportions, except we can't vote out the people who grate on our nerves. Why the sour mood, you ask? Because their presence threatens Callie and Arizona's screen time.

Jackson's character is all right and has some good lines, and while Sarah Drew is no doubt talented and pulls off nutty really well, I don't particularly want to see an April storyline. I suppose I don't really mind their presence, but their being regulars means that they'll have to get their obligatory share of storylines. This will only result in screen time getting spread thinner, or characters being in scenes en masse (i.e. putting Callie/Arizona/Mark together in more scenes together. As facetious as that sounds, I am convinced they tried doing that this year to give everyone more face time). There's nothing worse than seeing good actors/characters like Sara/JCap underused on the show.

I guess Shonda is planning for the future. But I would appreciate if she didn't devote season 7 to developing these new characters to get us to like them.

It's been bugging me since the announcements came out. Had to get it out.

Am with you Meg. Really? Sarah Drew? But in all fairness to her she acted superbly in the finale. I mean, she went all shaky and crazy looking and well great acting chops there but another regular? I thought Jesse Williams was enough. Oh well.
I still can't look past the moment when she went all crushing on Derek. lol. Now if she would have more screen time than Callie and Arizona I would seriously hate her. She wouldn't care but still. lol xD

Yeah, this Sarah Drew thing makes no sense. Her character is so bland. Even though I didn't like Reed, she at least had some spice. My guess is that JCap will probably miss more time than we are anticipating so they needed another character to fill the void. Hope I'm wrong.

:0 Don't really get why they needed to add Sarah Drew as a regular. They either have a storyline they want to pursue that her character fits, or they are stacking up the cast with lots of regulars now, so they audience is comfortable with them...thinking of the future, if some of the original cast decide not to renew contracts (were they 7 season contracts?).

They are signed on to Season 8. Shonda gives contradictory answers - on the one hand, she hinted that she would want the show to go on and on; on the other, she said that she could not see the show without Ellen Pompeo. But I can see them trying to extend the run without EP and PD and SO. I'll keep watching as long as SaRa and JCap are on though, no matter how annoying the new people are. I'm a sucker... :P

Maybe adding more characters is her way of trying to phase Ellen and Patrick out since they both have stated they are not interested in going beyond the projected 7 or 8 years. Kind of like what they did with George during season 5. She knew T.R. was leaving so they gave him small parts to keep him just visible or busy enough, but nothing substantial. We got used to seeing less and less of George so it wasn't a huge loss at the end. KH on the other hand, was sudden and it impacted the show and Alex's character significantly.

I don't know if she is tryng to phase PD and EP out. But I have read that PD has 3 or more movies he is working on. Also Kevin M. has a few movies he is doing. And I believe Sandra Oh is doing a series for Canadian tv that has about 6 episodes. So they may have been regulars to fill these voids.

I think what I don't like the most about the new additions, is the fact that characters like C/A already didn't get alot of screen time. But also AZ's character has never really been given a backstory. And these things should be addressed before new characters are added.

  • Reija

I don't really like these new additions. I mean does the show really need more regulars, because there are now what 14?! that's just too much. They better not give arizona less screen time just because jcap is pregnant. I want to see more C/A moments that will totally melt my heart! :P

So does this mean that instead of seeing our girls the last 3 minutes of every episode we are now only going to see them the last minute and a half  ?
It is totally ridiculous to add Sarah Drew as a regular. She was not very interesting to begin with and I can't see her adding anything to bring up the ratings. I can take Jesse but not Sarah!
Even though the addition of these two new regulars will upset most JCap and Sara fans Shonda knows it will do nothing to make us stop watching them. She is well aware that we love them and can't do without them.

:s Not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand Jesse is awfully cute and funny, on the other hand, not enough to take screen time away from our main characters. As far as I'm concerned, Avery and April are fine in the background. Like the interns who are always there in the background but none of them, (Lexie being the exception) is a regular.
They may be trying to give the show a younger look??? Out of the regulars, Sara and Jessica are the younger (33 or 34), the others are 38 are up so they may be looking to mix it up a little? Isn't that what ER did? They lasted 15 years but I don't think any of the original cast was there at the end. (I never watched so I'm going by what I've read). What's puzzling is the choice to add Sarah Drew. Most people seem to really dislike her. I think the decision had already been made to keep her and that's why they gave her a significant role in the finale and that's why (per Shonda) Meredith 'welcomed her' into the fold by taking her hand when she broke down.
Come to think of it, I don't like it. How can they develop significant storylines that we can be invested in when they keep adding people? Especially when you have so many single people that will have to be paired up with someone which means, more new characters. Nope. I don't like it at all. Shonda, just give Calzona, Owen/Cristina, Mark/Lexie their own show call it 'Friends in Seattle' and then feel free to experiment with GA's formula to your heart's content.

  • NK

I like the idea of 'Friends in Seattle' :cheer: I'm sure it'll tank though, but I'd watch just for Calzone.

  • Lauren

What really bugs me about this is that they already have Teddy who they haven't really developed past the whole triangle and the only place she fits in other than as cristina's teacher is as Arizona's friend, so now we might get alot of Arizona and Teddy while Callie and Mark have sreen time, thus making callie and Arizona screen time less common. wow that's a terrible sentence...

Hey, does anyone know what resident year alex, meredith, and Christina will be next year? Cause they never fallow the years properly and stuff...

  • McShady

    @Lauren

I think that they're gonna be 4th or 5th year residents right? In s5 Arizona said that Karev was a 3rd year. And last season Callie was a 5th year who became an attending right?

  • wendy

yes. i totally agree Sarah isnt interesting at all. Besides, there's really a lot of them as series regular!

  • ribanbel

not sure what Drew can bring to this cast

  • mfeo

I read somewhere that patrick didn't see the show going on more than 2 years...and i wonder if season 7 will be a bit light with callie and arizona time cause jc is pregnant. I agree that they have a few characters now like arizona and teddy that we know very little about....would be nice to know more about them but doesn't really bother me that they are keeping april and jackson much...

  • ribanbel

    MFEO

Patrick "doesn't see the show going on more than 2 years" until Shonda shows him a LOT of $

  • Bre

Bollocks... that is all I can say about less screen time and April.

  • ribanbel

Jess looks gorgeous pregnant
