Shonda's Post-Finale Interview with Ausiello E-mail
Written by Admin

So Ausiello had a pretty long interview with Shonda, who shared her thoughts on the season finale and was asked about Jessica's pregnancy:

Jessica Capshaw is pregnant in real life. Arizona decides at the end of the episode that she wants to have kids with Callie. Is there a connection there?
RHIMES:
No — although I love that Jessica is pregnant. I feel like every year we have to have somebody on the show who’s pregnant and we have to hide the pregnancy. It’s what we do now.

So the pregnancy won’t be written into the storyline?
RHIMES:
Nope.

What a relief that it will not be written in! I am of the opinion that it is way too soon to bring in a bebe. I mean, AZ just finally wrapped her head around the idea of having children with Callie. It would lack logical flow for her to suddenly be carrying the child come early next season. Phew!

I just read the article of the 'show tracker' and I hope we don't have to worry by reading this about calzona: "My only concern is that a reconciliation in such a time of crisis can't last." Come an they are just back together and to me it seems like both Arizona and Callie were very serious and very happy with the choice they made together. Both willing to bend for each other! Didn't they have had enough drama? MFEO right??

And Meg I am also glad they won't write Jessica's pregnancy in to the storyline! I want to see more romance and a stable relation between them and a WEDDING!!! :woohoo:

  • McShady

    @Anne

I don't think you should worry that is just someones thoughts. I am worried too but s7 isnt being written yet so we can stay cool for now okay? :) we have 4 more months to go lol

  • MZ

    Meg,
First of all, just want to add my thanks for all the great work, especially this week with all the spoilers.
    I agree on both counts.
It is not like their relationship began with the crisis. The crisis just allowed them to let down the barriers that kept them from expressing their feelings.
And no babies yet for them. I think the first one (except for Bailey) should be MerDer’s. I want C/A to wait until the spinoff! Can you imagine that as a show?

  • Admin

Thanks, MZ, and thank you to every one's comments. I haven't had a chance to reply to the others. It's been great fun this season. Look out for new posts throughout the summer. You never know what I'll suddenly feel like blogging about.

  • Bre

Thank god... though the only good part about having it written in would have been more Arizona time. Wonder if she will go visit those parents that she is so fond of. ;)

  • McShady

It's impossible but a spin-off on showtime would be great ;)

  • JB

When I first learned of Jessica's pregnancy my first thought was... wouldn't it be great to write it into the show. Well, after what we have witnessed for the past few weeks I have to agree, it's not the right thing to do. We do know that they both can't live without one another but they also need to learn more about one another before kids can be brought into their relationship. They do need romance, they need to talk, they need quiet alone time and they need to get out of that apartment and into one of their own. Now some might think this will turn them into a boring couple but I'm sure Shonda will have things planned for them. The drama she has given us this season has only made us love them even more. I'm sure we will all agree drama is good but a little less will make us much happier.
I also believe by the time Greys ends for good :( not only will Callie and Arizona be together, they will have that house, chickens, dogs and one little Calzona to love!

  • McShady

I just have to ask if anyone else is worried about this: If they would give them a kid later on, how would people react?

I live in Sweden and things are pretty liberal over here. I mean same-sex marriages are ok and people are okay with gay people. I'm straight but I know a lot of people that are gay and don't face problems in their lives (more than the usual).

That being said, people over here are still having trouble with the whole kids having two mommys/daddys.

And my impression is that in the US people are even more troubled about these things.

I really love Calzona, my boyfriend too (wonder why ;) ). But I really have a feeling that a kid is something abc never would give them. And if a kid would mess up the relationship then I'm qouting Arizona "And by no I mean YIKES" about babies.

  • Christina

I think ABC would allow same-sex parents. "Modern Family," while not ABC is on NBC and holds a prime-time slot; they have a gay male couple with a daughter. That said, I am with many other 'Grey's' viewers in my opinion that Calzona shouldn't have any little ones in Season 7.

  • Admin

Good point about Modern Family, Christina. What's even better is that that show is actually on ABC. The general consensus is that ABC is the most gay-friendly of all the networks.

  • Tobilover

Modern Family is an ABC show! In recent ratings I have seen, ABC is definitely rated as the most progressive/GLBTQ-friendly network.

  • Lauren

I think (hope) ABC may allow them to get a kid or decide to have a kid near the end of the series. If Ellen P decides to leave after season 8, I think we may see at least a mention of them having kids near the end.

  • v_e_r_o

hi!!!...I'd like to see before the children... they got married first...but before they married that arizona submit to their parents... :woohoo: ... to callie and us... I think the children might be for season 8?...
I think the arizona submit to callie could be pursued...not want to see more drama but more action between them... :woohoo:
by a parenthesis and lost count of the times I've seen the last two chapters ... especially when callie strokes her face arizona... :P
And realized the gestures that ago Arizona when she sees Callie in the last scene...when callie removed off her angry face...as that impresses and I think it escapes before thinking about returning to kiss her...I interpret it so... :P

  • calliopearizona

well, i just hope and pray that our Calzona will have more scenes in S7..meeting AZ father or more about her background..more intimate and passionate kiss for them..and cute moments for Calliope and Arizona on s7 please.. :(

    You read my mind!! :woohoo:

  • bercho29

Keeping them apart was not even an option Shonda said that on the writers blog I'm not worried just quite happy they are back together. The things Shonda said on the podcast about Callie and Arizona that they are so sweet as a couple and they melt her heart too. Shonda is the most committed to them and she loves them as we do. Im going trust Shonda that she is not going to disappoint ever with Callie and Arizona. JCap and SR are ace!!! Callie and Arizona must Shonda's favorite characters she hit the jackpot with them her idea pairing them was the best she had.
I agree it too soon for them to have kids. They finally admit their fears and realize that they can't live without being together. Season 6 has changed everything looking forward to see what its going to happen in S7.
They are in this loving adult committed relationship and both know that now.
Maybe S7 is going to be titled the season of the surprises.

  • ribanbel

I hope S7 will focus on their relationship but I don't want them to turn into a boring couple by any means

  • bercho29

I don't think that they could ever be a boring couple Shonda might have more drama for them in S7. If Mer/Der are going to build their dream house then C/A might move into a big house too without having intruders when they take shower.
On a funny side this podcast Shonda made me laugh when she was talking about the chief you can't kill the chief, even if you try really hard he is sort of bad ass even he wears jumpers.

  • unboringmom  - boring - not

hoping sincerely that the reference to a boring couple here has nothing to do with them being 'strapped down' with kids! My partner and I have been together for 13 years and now have a 3 yo don whom we adopted at birth.
I can assure you we are NOT boring. And, I can tell you also that there is NOTHING more sexy than watching your partner (Owen's mama) playing with him, making him laugh or cuddling him at night! There are hundreds of stories to be written into a show and it would not at all take away from opportunities for a little adult time (passion/romance), it would only add to the dimensions of this awesome couple.

  • mfeo

They are totally MFEO and there is no way they would break them up again for s7...to me they got to the real issue why Arizona didnt want kids...she didn't trust Callie and i think now she does...Callie didn't run...i'm sure next season will have drama for them but maybe more in the form of them having kids or meeting families etc..

  • Lauren

I totally agree, but I think that some of the drama next season will revolve around what was said in that fight. In my experience, it is a HUGE deal for someone in a comitted relationship like that to say they don't trust the other person and I think Callie may show how much that upsets her in the next season. Plus, lack of trust doesn't disapate with a single act, Arizona seems more like she is going to put an effort towards trusting Callie. Also, chances are that they will barely revisit the baby subject until the final season, cause Shonda does not do babies.

  • mfeo

Hi Bercho29, can't find the writers blog or podcast with shonda..can you tell me where it is? or come on over and show me...still got sangria

  • bercho29

here it is the writers blog

and the podcast you can listen to
    http://www.fancast.com/blogs/2010/tv-news/greys-boss-shares-secrets-behind-killer-finale-deleted-scenes/
of course Im coming over if still have sangria with some donuts cakes.

  • mfeo

awesome..thanks..now i really want to see the 18 mins that were deleted from the episode that are only on the dvd...i want to hear callie sing...she had an amazing voice...wish they would have put that in the last scene..although i did like the song they played...now we have to slog out the long summer with no grey's...

  • bercho29

I read somewhere in the beginning of S7 they will special cross over with PP and Derek's little sister will show up.
I wonder when some of Arizona's relatives will come to Seattle to visit her not just to talk on the phone with them every day.
When they will show something or someone of her past. She probably have other friends apart from Teddy. Maybe Callie's sisters will show up that would be interesting and her mother.
Hey MFEO I have here vintage red wine you can join me I have plenty, during the long summer I hope to see you around I already miss Greys and Calzona.

  • Gauze paws

Can anyone help. my calzona play list on my iPod is missing two songs correatown sunset and echo from the "I'm not broken" scene and Landon pigg the way it ends from the whoop whoop they're back together scene. At the moment my playlist stops on the elevator and it's depressing me. Can't get either in iTunes maybe due to not being released in uk dunno but I'd love to complete my playlist to help keep
    me sane thru the summer:)

maybe by standing up to McCrazy :s the way she did;Callie might have answered a lot of Arizona's doubt on the state of their relationship and her love for her and commitment to her :)

  • Lauren

Well, for most people I would think that might be enough. But just think of the long list of Callie's selfless acts. How is this one going to change her mind? Arizona was right in that it can be hard to tell the difference between how she is with Arizona, to how she was with George or Erica. Arizona plays things close to the vest. Callie is such a polar opposite it must baffle her somewhat how open Callie is with her heart. To Callie trust comes naturally. Arizona trusts very few people and she worked really hard to trust those people. Callie will, whether Arizona trusts her now or not, spend some time thinking about why Arizona didn't trust her before and it will eat at her a bit. I'm sure they will work it out, I'm just a little curious as to how it plays out.

  • bercho29

In season 6 they started the merger and finished with the merger. Now the hospital its not the safest place it is a crime scene. For all of them will be hard to go back there and work again. So S7 will be after warmth and how they will deal with this situation and no one is going to be the same I dont for how many episodes its going to be but I guess like the merger most of the season. So there will be drama and I think its going to be quite interesting to watch how they will overcome their fears.

  • ribanbel

they will ALL rally around each and focus on Meredith for 2 reasons. The baby and with Derek recuperating.Let's hope there are no lingering effects on him

I wonder if Meredith will tell him about the baby?

I bet Callie and Arizona will focus on their relationship even more now they came close to losing each other

I suspect you'll see hugs and a few kisses or maybe them in bed under the sheets but nothing more.

Ramirez was asked if she thought that Callie and Arizona were physical and she said yes :P

  • Admin

Hi Ash.. I'm working on it and hope to have it up by Monday evening. I plan to keep posting about various topics (and maybe even doing a couple of season 5 reviews for Calzona-heavy eps) during the summer to get us through the long break.

  • Jen

    Meg,

Just want to echo what others have alredy said. You are amazing to have created this space for all of us to interact. I love that it is so international.

    Your work is well appreciated.

I think it is more than Shonda loving the cuteness of Calzona. This woman is brillant! She knows exactly which actors have chemistry together and are beloved by the audience, so she must keep them together on the long haul for the shows sake. Jessica and Sara together are fantastic, it would be stupid to seperate them, and more than that, it would somehow lack further romantic storylines for both of them - Callie back to dating men is maybe Arizonas greatest fear but not really a interesting and very realistic story to tell for the show and bringing on another lesbian character for Arizona is too far to go. So, considering this, just because of the pure facts they will stay together.
And looking back on the season - Shonda always brought on what people asked for - either she lurks around here :woohoo: or she is that brillant that she is as people here miss various things (physical interaction, kisses, Callie being strong, Az being vulnerable, drama before the relationship gets boring, happy ending) and sooner or later we got what we asked for! We are the audience (well part of, but important part of), we are right and we are awesome and Shonda wants to keep us watching. And we are right, when we see things missing! Therefore, as it was mentioned and asked quite often, I´m sure we will see more of Arizonas past, we will see her parents (or one of them), they were mentioned by Callie not so long ago, we really need to know more of her character - where does she come from and grow up actually? are there more siblings? etc. She became a very important and strong character on the show and Shonda is not stupid to let the chance for some good stories pass. And I´m sure we will see them in a more physical way than just kissing - okay, covered by blankets eventually, but, he, good chance for abc to get some publicity.
Come on folks, have faith in godess Shonda, we are the audience and she has to satisfy us loyal watchers! :cheer:

  • adencroft

There's one thread at abc questioning the kiss between Callie and arizona saying it's inappropriate, anyway i'm surprised at the posters mostly straight people and they really like our girls..they bombarded those people complaining about the kiss.

  • Admin

Oh, that makes me so happy to hear. :cheer: Hooray for progress!

  • JB

I just finished reading some (I had to stop) of the post on that ABC Greys thread. OMG! Homophobia has run rampant over there. :s One person posted... "I too thought the kissing scene was unnecessary. I don't like the whole lesiban thing on Grey's. I think we could do without it all together - stick to hetrosexual, it works for most people. If you want to watch that kind of show there are DVD's and actual TV shows that are dedicated to that type of "acting." Some were even worse. I assume all these people have been watching Greys for some time now, it's not like they didn't know about Callie and Arizona. If they are all so upset and disgusted by this wonderful lesbian couple....change the channel!!! Closed minded individuals are so sad :( ! Gay or straight, does it really matter, we are all human beings. Imagine what the world would be like if everyone could just get along with one another. Sorry for my rant, it just pisses me off!

  • Admin

Hrmph. This is why I avoid frequenting those boards. These comments make my blood boil. I only hope that these discussions do not impact the way ABC handles their relationship.

  • nadilla

awesome! i really want to check that out...

I haven't been on an ABC board since the 2008 elections and I am glad I did.I went back to check things out and . . .

Which is what you mean by maybe in bed under the sheets? I hope one scene when they are in bed to do some spirited footwear... and parents from Arizona and Callie arrived in the room and are shocked but Callie and Arizona continue what what had started this and kindly ask parents to leave the room or they might regret it!!! I think Callie and Arizona have more class and respect for their parents than you are suggesting and for their relationship;for that matter!

  • Uniquely Yours

I wouldn't get too upset about what those homophobic people say about Calzona. I am straight and I love them!!! There are a lot of straight friends that I have who feel the same. If there was a problem from ABCs perspective, they would have toned that down a long time ago. Once they showed Calzona in the shower, kissing, naked...it was on! But then, you saw them kissing A LOT and Arizona running her hand down toward Callie's butt...still ABC continued. The people who are saying something now clearly have not been watching the show all season. And, ABC, believe me, knows that Callie and Arizona have a HUGE following. Shonda was smart in how she introduced Arizona and slowly developed the Calzona relationship. That is why I am saying that most of these negative voices have not been watching this entire past season (or even the end of season 5). Fear not...Calzona will be fine. You may not see too much more heavy sexual interactions, but enjoy what you get for now. Grey's is and has been revolutionary...and will continue to be. Just my opinion.
