Grey's ratings were again similar to the prior couple of weeks, with total viewers lower compared to before the holidays but once again coming in first among the 18-49 age group. Read on for my full review.
Overall, it was a pretty good episode and superior to the last two eps, which seemed better than they actually were only because of the hot Callie & Arizona action. I actually enjoyed the other storylines, which kind of flowed more seamlessly into one another compared to the lack of cohesiveness that I've felt in the past few eps. Plus, there were enough decent scenes to make up for the nausea-inducing sessions between Owen the Barbarian and Cristina.
As well, I love that Callie and Arizona are just as amazing in separate scenes with other characters as they are together, which is good for longevity. I'm not too upset at the amount of Callie/Arizona interaction in this ep; they made it up in the number of quality scenes with other people.
And onto the episode...
Meredith and Bailey are operating in the OR, chit chatting about being able to catch Shepherd's speech if they finish early, when suddenly, the patient's heart rate skyrockets. Bailey says she doesn't see any bleeders and is baffled as to why it is happening, until she senses movement. Turns out the patient has come awake during the surgery and is no doubt screaming in silence. I don't blame her for freaking out - it's never a good thing when you can feel someone rummaging through your bowels like they are digging through their drawer for a matching sock.
Oblivious to the horror show that's unfolding in the OR, the rest of the surgical staff (or those who give a crap about who's running the dang place) gather to hear Derek's big speech after having deposed Richard. Owen gives Teddy the cold shoulder and joins Cristina, Callie, and Arizona near the front. We see Arizona loosening her upper body and limbs, clearly a prerequisite for any cheerleading moves she's about to do.
While Derek goes through his cue cards one last time, his new get-up, complete with a bulky tie, does not go noticed:
Callie: What the hell is he wearing? Owen: Looks good… chiefly. Cristina: He looks like an undertaker. Arizona: I promised him we'd clap. Cristina: Oh. Now?
As Derek's awkward delivery of his prepared speech begins, it is met with a look of skepticism from Callie as she glances over at Arizona, but Arizona's practically glowing with belief, as though she and Derek just chugged a pitcher of Kool-Aid in his new office.
Derek's moment of self-crowning glory is stolen when Richard and Skinner (sorry, he remains nameless to me on Grey's) enter the lobby. The speech stumbles to a quick and merciful end under Richard's glare. Arizona glances around, notices that people are about to scatter, and proceeds to clap in an exaggeratedly enthusiastic manner, not unlike one would to a puppy for retrieving a tennis ball or a baby for burping. Some of the staff grudgingly oblige, including Callie, who shakes her head, laughing at the pathetic scene that just unfolded. She's probably also amused by the things that Arizona does and the things that she has made a hardcore ortho surgeon such as herself do. Damn the fairy dust. As people start clearing out, Callie suddenly realizes she's the only one still clapping and abruptly stops and makes a face at Arizona as if to say, "Why the hell am I still clapping?" What I would give to see Arizona's reaction to that little display.
As people are scattering, Arizona approaches Karev…
Arizona: Karev… I hear that you are the future of Peds. Karev: Excuse me? Arizona: Yeah, a little birdie named Bailey whispered into my ear. I want you to work with me today so I can see if she's right. Karev: What did she say? Avery: That you are the best baby-sitter in the hospital. Karev: Shut up! Arizona (to Avery): <chuckles> You don't think Peds is hardcore? 'Cos you can say that to my face, Avery. Avery: No… No, ma'am. Arizona: Mhmm… don't let the roller-skates fool you. Peds is nothing but hardcore. (To Karev) Rounds.. in ten.
Ah.. trademark Arizona, a perfect mixture of sweet and feisty. It makes me chuckle, though, that Arizona is trying to sell Peds as being hardcore while simultaneously using words like "little birdie" in her sales pitch. Cute.
Arizona and Alex are in their patient's room examining him while his parents look on. Brad complains of abdominal pains but his father is highly skeptical, instead choosing to believe that his son is faking just to get out of school.
Meanwhile, Callie's sorting some ortho supplies in a room when Lexie barges in to vent about Mark and tears a roll of cast padding into shreds in the process. Callie humors Lexie's ranting with her semi-committal responses for a bit, until the compulsive over-sharer in her lets it slip that Mark slept with Addison more than once. Upon hearing this, Lexie abandons the frenzied shredding and storms out of the room, leaving Callie to wince at her own tactlessness.
Elsewhere, Arizona and Alex are standing in front of Brad's films as they get into a discussion on the possible diagnosis, but not before a lesson in differentiating between a potentially malignant spot and an ill-placed piece of lint. Alex theorizes that it doesn't make sense for a kid to skip class only to go to the hospital, no matter how lame the kid may be. Arizona, however, unwittingly admits to being "lame" when she breaks into bubbly mode over her memories of fun times at the hospital, as though suddenly transported back to her childhood of playing dirty in the playground to defend her name and then sneaking off to hospital supply rooms for some playtime with cool medical supplies.
Arizona: I loved the hospital when I was a kid. No school… lots of cool medical supplies to play with...
However, her attempt to share her fond, if somewhat bizarre, childhood memories rams right into the brick wall that is Karev's uninterested expression. Realizing that she is about to embarrass herself further, Arizona wisely reels herself in with an "… okay yeah, so let's go over it again…". Heh. Nice attempt at a recovery. They banter back and forth about the possible issues with Brad before Karev comes up with a potential diagnosis for which only a fancy test, which would cost thousands of dollars, could verify. Arizona reminds him that the parents would not get on board if they barely agreed to spend money on a CT earlier.
AZ seems to have picked up on Callie's endearing habit of over-sharing and rambling. Now I'd like to see them over-share with each other (though only on the cute stuff, not gory details of their past sex lives). Also, I really love how realistic and practical everyday issues that doctors and patients face are incorporated into this storyline.
Back in Brad's room, AZ and Alex broach the subject of performing the exploratory surgery, only to be met with much kicking and screaming from his father, who is convinced that his son is nothing but a troublemaker. Gee, who needs enemies when your own father treats you this way… After the parents leave the room, Arizona turns this into a teaching moment:
Arizona: You think it's right for them to take them home? Brad: It isn't. Arizona: Shh, Brad. I'm teaching.
Outside Brad's room, Alex conjures up frightening scenarios for the parents (usually a foolproof tactic) and scares the parents into agreeing to the exploratory surgery as Arizona looks on like a proud mama bird.
AZ and Alex are in the OR after having strong-armed the parents into agreeing to the exploratory surgery, which unfortunately, does not yield any new findings. Arizona remains surprisingly upbeat given that the surgery was a bust. That's because she is delegating Alex to deal with the parents:
Karev: Me? Arizona: Yeah, you bullied them into surgery… you gotta take the heat.
Did I just detect a hint of gloating in her tone? As in haw haw… I don't have to do it because it's a prime "teaching moment". I love when she displays her edginess.
As the parents confront Alex after the exploratory surgery, Brad starts to bleed internally, which prompts Alex to do something roguish, which involves cutting him open right there in the room to save the his life. In the OR, Arizona arrives fashionably late for the party, just in time to see Alex and Teddy knee deep in Brad's chest. AZ offers to scrub in but Teddy's holding out for Cristina (who's having trouble escaping Huntlet's vice-like grip), until she finally relents and lets an eager Jackson assist.
Callie, who appears to be having a surgery-lite day, wanders into the room where Mark is working on a skin graft. After complimenting him on his work, she casually brings up Lexie. Mark gets bent out of shape that Callie is even talking to Lexie and accuses her of taking Lexie's side (because, you know, we are back in grade 3). Good for Callie for trying to be somewhat objective here by calling out Mark on being "hypocritical, sexist, and immature". I don't like that he is making Lexie out to be the bad person here. Sure, good for him for taking responsibility for his past stupid mistakes, but it's not Lexie's fault that he suddenly has a child to take care of. What's more, he didn't even consult with her before asking Sloan to move in with them long-term. I just don't think that their relationship was at the stage yet. I can understand how Lexie's instinctual reaction would be to run, at the thought of being a grandmother in her 20's. Anyway, Callie's silenced by his outburst, and Mark delivers a parting shot with "And you made me wreck my skin graft!!" Gee, if that is not a display of maturity, I don't know what is.
Having saved Brad's life, Arizona and Alex relate what is supposed to be good news to his parents. The father, who is evidently a perpetually bitter and cynical sourpuss, rails against them for his son being hooked up to tubes rather than express gratitude that he will be fine in time. Alex, whose good behaviour has almost been bordering on uncharacteristic all episode, reverts to his vintage self (thereby making our world right again) and blows up at him:
Karev: Dude! Seriously, we're the reason your kid's alive. If you had it your way, you've been home and Brad's aorta ruptured and he'd be dead right now. Think about how much school he'd be missing then, huh?
Kudos, Karev. It's exactly what they needed to hear, and probably what Arizona would've screamed, too, if she were to suddenly lose all of her self-control and professionalism… and her mind.
At Alex's outburst, Arizona shuts it down before it escalates into an official complaint being filed and orders Karev to follow her right now. Arizona pulls Alex aside and promptly dives right into one of her famous verbal smackdowns:
Arizona: There's a difference between advocating for tiny humans and berating terrified parents. You're good with kids, I can see that. You've got great hands and great instincts, we already knew that. And you're as good as it gets when it comes to advocating for your patients, but until you've been a parent, until you've stayed up nights with a screaming infant, or dealt day in and day out with a terrorist toddler or raised a lying teenager, you don't get to judge parents. You have to advocate for the kids. You don't get to berate terrified parents. You clear on that? Karev: Yes. Arizona: Good. Then you go apologize to that family.
Arizona turns to walk away, pauses for dramatic effect, and turns back around…
Arizona: Karev, you saved that kid's life today. How'd it feel? Karev: It feels great. <smiles> Arizona: <smiles with full-wattage dimples> Hardcore, right? Karev: Yeah <big grin> Arizona: Welcome to Peds.
At that, Arizona turns around and takes off on her Heelys with flair, the breeze blowing at her hair as she glides suavely down the hallway. That was a swoon-worthy moment. I've never appreciated her Heelys as much as I did just then.
Arizona got kind of passionate there about not judging parents, as if she had personal experience with it. Maybe she's judged too harshly in the past and got in trouble for it or had to deal with raising a child (be it hers or not). Would be interesting to see a backstory but they probably wouldn't get into that.
I love that she can transition from a serious teaching moment to saying something encouraging to Karev to inspire him further. The fact that she can separate what he needs to work on and making him feel good about what he has accomplished is quite admirable and not easy to achieve.
Ah… I very much enjoyed Arizona tonight; it's reminiscent of season 5 Arizona when she mentored Bailey, the way she combined professionalism, sense of authority with a positive and bubbly attitude. So refreshing to see an attending who teaches for the sake of imparting knowledge at the hospital and for no other nefarious agenda. The Heelys bring back the cute and fun side of AZ. They bring the joy. The clunky heels for most of season 6 made her seem a little serious and mature. I'm also pleasantly surprised by Alex, who has grown on me considerably in this one ep. AZ actually made him smile. Alex can be a good guy if he feels that someone genuinely cares about him. And we can see that he really respects Arizona and listens to her. I can see it becoming a great platonic mentoring relationship. It goes without saying, but Jessica has chemistry with pretty much everyone on the show.
Back at Callie's apartment, we see Mark lying down as Callie asks him if he feels better. He answers in a sulky voice that he does, a little. Callie looks satisfied as she lies down on the bed, revealing Arizona on the other side of her, wearing a tank top/spaghetti-strapped nightie and a headband (?), and looking decidedly unamused by the turn of events. Lying in bed with her girlfriend's ex-sex buddy is definitely not her idea of a good time, and she voices as much: "This really isn't going to work for me…". Callie appeases her by taking her hand while her expression of contentment remains intact. Resigned, Arizona makes the strongest statement of protest that she possibly could under the circumstances, which is a pout.
Arizona might not like it, but she will bear it. And isn't it what it's all about? She knows how important Mark is to Callie, and she will not put her in a difficult position of making Callie choose. For her to make it a problem will be a redux of Callie/Hahn. I'm inclined to think that this little scene is just a one-time thing and more for comedic effect. As long as he does not regularly climb into bed with them, I'm fine with it. Their comedic timing was brilliant.
Random thoughts:
I had mixed feelings about a Bailey love interest storyline, but to my surprise, I enjoyed the bantering between her and Ben. He and his wisecracks can stand up to the powerhouse that is Bailey. From what I've seen so far, they seem to have chemistry and I can believe them as a couple. But please, just keep him as a recurring character and not a series regular.
There were enough apologies in the episode to last a lifetime. Derek certainly went on an apology rampage at the end, didn't he?
I am getting tired of tortured Teddy. Please please end this misery and attach her to another storyline. I loved her character before but it's getting more and more difficult given the depressing spiral she's being put through in the last few eps. She needs a turnaround quickly before her character becomes unsalvageable. I have less of a problem with her not wanting Cristina on her service than Cristina not responding to her page when she was needed. As an attending, it's her prerogative to choose who gets to be on her service on a particular day, even though she was unofficially brought in as a "gift" for Cristina. If anything, it's unfair that other residents have not gotten a chance to work with the cardio goddess at the hospital.
So according to the writers, Huntlet and Cristina's violent makeup sessions were story driven and ultimately supposed to lead to the big talk at the end of this episode. Still, no storyline is worth subjecting our eyes to that horror. Disturbing visuals aside, I am glad that they finally had an honest and open conversation. It's a relief to finally see Cristina verbalize her thoughts with regards to Burke, but my favorite part was when she declared to Huntlet that she'll never let him take a piece of her again. I was really upset when she ignored the page, and I'm glad that she's aware of what's happening and putting a stop to it before making the same mistake again. Overall, a well written and acted scene there. Now can we please take a break from the triangle?
Nice of Derek to hire April back, but do we really need a Mercy Wester to come back? Maybe Reed and Nosedive could switch out, sort of like tag-teaming, but forever.
