My Review of 6.12 - "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked" E-mail

Grey's ratings were similar to the prior week's, with total viewers lower compared to before the holidays but once again coming in first among the 18-49 age group. Read on for my full review.

Wow… where I do even begin? This episode just blew all of our expectations out of the water. What an unprecedented amount of Callie & Arizona hotness… we got innuendos, action, and tenderness all rolled into one episode. Frankly, the makeout scene made the naked shower scene from the last ep look almost tame. I really had no clue what happened with the other characters after the first 10 minutes, so like many of you, I'm sure, I had to rewatch the ep.

Without further ado, let's just dive right into the Callie & Arizona goodness, shall we?

In the opening scene, Bailey is in the middle of using this newfangled procedure to treat cancer that involves injecting the heated chemo into the body and then massaging the patient's body to spread it. For a non-medical professional like myself, the whole thing looks eerily like she's marinating a piece of pork tenderloin. (Is it obvious that I was just watching the Food Network?) Irreverence aside, though, I hear that it's an important cutting edge procedure in the real world that'll help many patients.

The gallery is packed with familiar faces, some of whom are genuinely interested in observing the procedure (like Cristina), while others are there just to grace Bailey with their obligatory presence (yes, I'm looking at you, Callie). As Bailey's eagle eyes scan the deck and makes a mental note of who's there and who's not (whom she will hunt down later), Callie promptly declares (not without adding some flare with an A-okay gesture) that now that Bailey has seen her, she's leaving. Cristina is surprised, given that the procedure has only just started. Callie, apparently, has a headache and in need of some coffee. Arizona, who has been sitting quietly in the row behind them and having observed their exchange, leans in from behind Callie and whispers not-so-softly and in a pointed drawl that she "knows a cure for headaches that doesn't involve coffee." (and no, she wasn't referring to Tylenol)….Wow, Arizona rarely makes suggestive comments, but when she does… Yow!!  How AZ can pull it off looking so sweet and innocent while saying something so saucy is beyond me.  I have to admit that given the way they've been portraying AZ to be the consummate professional at work and a straight arrow, I did not peg her to be the initiator of on-call room sexytimes but I'm certainly loving this side of her. I guess all bets are off when you're in a relationship with Callie "Torrid Sex" Torres.

After taking in the proposition, the unmistakable self-indulgent smirk appears on Callie's face as she gives a quick nod.  AZ gets up and practically streaks out of there, and Callie follows suit to get some… medical attention. Cris probably heard more than she wanted to, and looks both a little annoyed and incredulous at the same time. I reckon that she's only secretly jealous that their faces still look so fresh and intact with all the making out, because her own face and jaw are put through the spin cycle of a washing machine every time Owen puts his mechanical clamps (which he defines as kissing) on her face.

In the on-call room, Arizona wastes no time in administering her "cure", which apparently involves first slamming Callie against a wall (if for no other reason than to literally knock the headache out of her). Boy, AZ is really establishing herself to be the dominant one in these activities, isn't she? The song playing in the background certainly gives the sequence a raw and primal feel. They engage in some heavy lip-locking while Callie voices her approval by way of moans and giggles.  If Callie's the vocal one, then Arizona's all action, as she repeatedly presses her body up and against Callie's and slides her hand down her behind.

Everything's good and sexy and hot… that is until Callie gets a little too hot:

Arizona: You're hot.

Callie: You're hot, too. <kiss>

Arizona: No, you're hot…<kiss>

Callie: <giggles>

Arizona: …hot…

Callie: <giggles> Oh okay! Thanks!

Arizona: <kiss> No..nono.. you have a fever. You..you have a fever.

Arizona repeatedly tries to pull away (well, half-heartedly at first) to check Callie's temperature, but when Callie's in the zone, there's only one thing on her mind, and it's certainly not going to be deterred by pesky things like symptoms. Even when Arizona notes that she has a fever, she's met with resistance as Callie keeps leaning towards her in an attempt to continue the kissing and reaches around AZ to not-so-gently tug her back towards her while ignoring her protests… Pffttthhh? What fever? Look what we're doing here - of course I'd feel feverish.

The sexytime grinds to a complete halt when Arizona discovers something decidedly unsexy - red spots on Callie's chest - and exclaims "oh my god!" She immediately pulls up Callie's shirt sleeve to examine her arm, and declares in a panicked voice, "Pox!! Pox!! You have chicken pox!!"  Nothing kills the mood like bumpy red spots all over your lover's body. Arizona looks repulsed by the sight and literally shoves Callie's hand away. Callie looks down at her own arm and gasps loudly. I am amused and slightly surprised by Arizona's reaction to the pox as it was almost violent. It's bordering on being uncharacteristic but fits with the storyline in the rest of the episode, I suppose. Still, funny that in 2 seconds flat, Arizona went from swapping saliva with Callie to avoiding touching Callie's diseased hand like the…heh…plague.

By the way, is it my imagination or do JCap's lips look a little dry in the last shot? They must've had to do this sequence many times from various distances and angles.

Callie & Arizona are the epitome of hawt and cute combined. I love the way they go at it. Plus, they don't need to devour each other's faces for it to be hot.  These two do everything right to exude sexiness.  Let us make a checklist of things they do right. And Huntlet? It would behoove you to take notes.

So here goes Calzona's list o' makeout hotness:

1. Roaming hands everywhere, from shoulder to arms to neck to ass to back of the head.

2  Capturing each other's faces in-between their hands.

3. Moans and giggles of pleasure by a certain Calliope Torres.

4. Arizona pressing her body into Callie's, who already has her back against the wall.

5. The kissing being at the right intensity rather than have one person's face at risk of being inhaled.

6. Callie's sexy biting of her lower lip near the end, just as Arizona examines the spots on her chest.

I'm surprised that it was so long and intense. There's no doubt that there was a long silence in the Calzona fandom after the scene ended. I know my jaw was at risk of being permanently stuck to the floor.

The next thing we know, Callie's in a hospital gown and sitting on a bed grumpily as Arizona grandly slides open the glass door to present… Lexie! The "World Class Specialist!" Really, Callie, did you take Arizona's word for it when she said that she was going to get you a world class specialist for chicken pox?  Arizona apparently snooped through Lexie's personnel file (oooh, badass…) and verified that Lexie's had the vaccination. Arizona, meanwhile, claims that she's never had the vaccination or the chicken pox.

Callie: You're a pediatrician. How can you never have had...

Arizona: No! I'm a pediatric surgeon. I don't do little diseases on little people. I do big surgeries on… little people.

Callie Callie, you are just asking for trouble when you refer to your girlfriend as a pediatrician when she's clearly a pediatric surgeon. You know, with pediatric surgery being "as good as it gets" and the "the brass ring" and all.

Callie huffs that she's going home and hops off the bed in defiance. But this bravado is promptly squashed by Arizona's surprisingly effective "stop sign".

Arizona: Nonononono! Hey hey hey hey hey… hey! You are not…going…anywhere. You are highly contagious right now. You live this room and you're going to touch doorknobs and elevator buttons and then you'll be the…outbreak monkey.

Nothing saps the sexy out of your relationship by being called an "outbreak monkey". But clearly, desperate times calls for desperate measures.  What comedic chemistry between Jessica and Sara here. What chemistry, period!

Callie: I'm going to kill you!

Arizona: I love you…stop scratching, 'cos you're just going to make it worse, and then you're going to scar.

Wow, that was at once loving and patronizing. I think I like that. As for Lexie…well, she just looks like she'd rather be anywhere than in the middle of this lesbian drama.

By the time Lexie returns to check on Callie, she has apparently descended into lunacy, thanks to the inability to scratch her itch. She has resorted to leaning against the wall, which reminds me of a bear scratching its butt against a tree trunk (and the gauze paws really add to that image). Sara's performance - her command of comedic timing - coupled with the incredible lines in the tirade made this one of the (if not the) funniest scenes in the show's history. We expected Callie to be a drama queen, but she took the concept of hyperbole to a whole new level. The dialogue is worth transcribing here:

Callie: I don't care… scars are hot.. scars are badass… scars are poetic… I'm in pain…down to the core of my being. Pain, I'm going crazy pain. Scary, will-this-ever-go-away pain. Do you get that? D'you… d'you…d'you know what I mean when I..when I say that? Because this pain..is need to scratch an itch that I can't scratch…the pain of a thousand itches and it's making me crazy….Not funny crazy…it's bad crazy… it's dark crazy…it's make-a-suit-out-of-someone-else's-skin crazy, okay? Pain, Little Grey.. paaaaain…

Wow…melodramatic, much?

Lexie looks on helplessly for sometime, but suddenly blurts out that she had sex with Alex, hoping that it would help by relating to Callie's pain.

Callie: Why… are you telling.. me... this?

Lexie:  I'm in pain, too, is what I'm saying. I get your pain. Don't you see that? I do feel your pain because I'm in pain, too.

Callie: ...I have pox between my butt cheeks. You "pain" <air quotes> does not begin to compare to mine.

Callie, like a madwoman, waves her gauze paws in the air frantically and yells at Lexie to get out!

The air quotes with the gauze paws kill me!!! Absolutely the highlight of the scene. Sara plays crazy well. By the way, Lexie looks strangely mousey in this scene. It's probably because she's fearing for her life… or her skin being made into a suit.

Mark swoops in to be with Callie and proceeds to climb into her bed and rub her body to relieve the "pain of a thousand itches". Some people see it as a best friends-bonding type of scene. For those who see it as too intimate for comfort, according to the podcast, this particular scene is based on Shonda's own experience. To paraphrase what they said, her friend showed up to relieve her itching (wait…did that come off sounding weird?). I feel that scene was there just to tell Shonda's story (roll eyes) and a plot device to get Mark to confess to Callie about his sleeping with Addison. Don't believe that it's meant to lead to anything.

And now for the scene that has generated the most debate:

Mark is still rubbing Callie down on her bed while Lexie looks on from outside the room. Arizona approaches and takes in the sight in front of her, sighs and says wistfully that "it should be her". Lexie tells her not to be jealous and that they are just best friends. Arizona then confesses that she has actually had the chicken pox before:

Arizona: I had the chicken pox. I told her I hadn't…because…I…I find her miraculous…breathtakingly stunning. Just.. I can't stop looking at her. And I was afraid with the ooze and the fevers and the scratching… I wanted to stay in the sexy part of things, so I lied to my girlfriend, and now…he makes scratching look sexy.

..…..………

..…………..

What?

Did Arizona just confess that she lied?

I am aware that opinions differ widely on whether this is out of character for Arizona. Some believe that it's realistic for Arizona to have a flaw and that it makes sense that she is afraid of losing that sexiness in their relationship.  Some also say that Arizona's known to "call it wrong" sometimes, and she admitted as much after initially declining to date Callie. And then there are those that believe it's totally inconsistent with how she's been portrayed so far on the show and that she would never lie about something so trivial.

When I first watched it, it made me feel a little unsettled, just because the whole thing seems out of place. It would've made more sense if this issue came up earlier in their relationship. I mean, we've dealt with so many serious issues (i.e. Papa Torres, Callie being a tearful mess when George died) and Arizona has been nothing but supportive. And especially after her "good man in a storm" speech, it's hard to believe she'd suddenly be superficial about Callie's looks.  Whatever happened to taking care of people when they are hurting? At the first sign of the bumps, she hands Callie off to Lexie.

I am all for Arizona having flaws; I just wished that the flaws would be a little more consistent with how she's been portrayed on the show to date, especially since she told Cristina that she hated being lied to.

I do want to note something interesting, though. The writers of this episode are Tony Phelan and Joan Rater, the same writers who wrote "I Always Feel Like Somebody's Watchin' Me". If you recall, that's the episode where Callie wants to move to Portland and Arizona asks at the end if they are "girlfriends". And back then, it was a head-scratching moment - I felt the timeline was weird that they were just establishing themselves as girlfriends, just like now, this issue would make more sense earlier on in the relationship. It's like these two writers are a few months behind on the Calzona relationship.

Anyway, I would prefer to believe that the whole thing was concocted as an unfortunate plot device to get Mark and Lexie respectively to "confess" to Callie and to show that Arizona "grew" as a person in this episode. But really, it feels like they made her regress before the contrived "growth" in this ep. So I'm hoping that this is a just an isolated occurrence and that we can move on from this.

In the end, though, Arizona comes around and goes to be with Callie.  She kisses a sleeping Callie tenderly on the cheek and Callie stirs. Arizona climbs onto the bed and snuggles behind Callie and wraps an arm around her.

Callie: What are you doing? You'll get the chicken pox.

Arizona: So.. I get the chicken pox.

Arizona then softly kisses Callie on the shoulder and again on the back of her head while Callie takes a deep breath and looks completely at peace with Arizona there.

Okay, so Arizona lies again, though this time with a hint of remorse on her face and appears to regret her earlier actions. I can understand that confessing the whole thing at that moment would probably do more harm than good as Callie does not need a an emotional freak-out while she's sick. On the one hand, I do hope that after Callie recovers, Arizona fesses up at some point because their relationship should be based on full disclosure. I'd hate for Callie to live with the false assumption that Arizona braved the pox to be with her. On the other hand, Callie seems to believe that it's better to keep a dirty secret to yourself for the overall good of the relationship. After all, she did just tell both Mark and Lexie to keep their secrets to themselves. So maybe for Callie's sake, she's better off not knowing.

All in all, wonderful Callie & Arizona interaction in this episode. The things I discussed above are relatively minor and I doubt they'll resurface, so I'm not that bothered, especially since we got all that action. Thank you Shonda and ABC for giving the Callie and Arizona fans what we've been waiting for. And good job to Donna Dietch. Let's hope this is the start of much more hotness in the future.

Random thoughts:

In the last scene, you can see that Arizona's wearing sneakers as she is climbing onto the bed. Also, you can catch a glimpse of them when she's leaving the observation deck. Hard to tell if they are Heelys, though. But the fact that she's back in sneakers made me smile.

Chyler Leigh really does comedy well: "Alex and I… we've done it before. It was like...recycling. It was like…good for the environment".

Hope we can take a breather from Not!The!Usual!Love!Triangle! after this episode. It's been exhausting to watch.

Perfect amount of screen time for the lone Mercy Wester, which is about 20 seconds.

JCap's hair looks really good in this ep - a "looser" style to go with the theme of the episode, no doubt.

Once again , AWSOME review Meg everytime I finish reading your review I watch the Callie-Arizona scenes again and love them even more You've done a great job with this review, made me see the details even better . I just wanted to say something about the part where Arizona says that she lied about the pox... Maybe we shouldn't judge her that much,it was just a little lie and she clearly made her point why she said that. It's obvious that she loves Callie very much and you can see at the end of the episode her expression when she climbs into the bed next to Callie. You can see her - very sorry and sad that she lied to her girlfriend - face. And when she says " So..I get the chicken pox " you can hear in her voice all the love for Callie.
Maybe I'm wrong, but then again, Arizona really felt guilty and in the end, she made everything better
Admin   |2010-01-24 22:42:17
Hey Vanda.. I appreciate your comment. I agree with you that AZ felt badly at the end and she loves Callie very much. There's no doubt about that. I am just surprised that she's concerned about losing the sexiness to the degree that she would lie about it. It's more to do the timing of it all given how much she's been through with Callie to date. Essentially, I'm just more questioning the writing, because I really thought their relationship has progressed past that after the ILYs.

Glad to hear that you're enjoying the scenes even more now. That's what I'm here for.. to re-watch the scenes over and over so I could capture the minute details for you guys. It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it
Chenell   |2010-01-24 22:07:53
Love your review...as always. OMG!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices the grossness of what is supposedly Owen kissing...gag
Admin   |2010-01-24 22:39:43
Thanks, Chenell!

I know.. and we're supposed to see more of that in the next ep, according to Shonda's tweet. Goody.
Audrey   |2010-01-25 02:04:53
Poor Sandra Oh. She has to let Kevin bite her head off ALL the time (and appear like she's enjoying it). She deserves an Emmy just for that.

Let's pray they give us more Callie/Arizona hotness to cancel out the horrific-ness of Owen tearing off layers of Cristina's epidermis.
Stacy   |2010-01-24 22:51:57
I just wanted to point out to those who didn't know that Donna Dietsch, the director of this episode is also the woman who directed the movie Desert Hearts. A wonderful choice!
Admin   |2010-01-24 22:57:51
Thanks, Stacy. I neglected to point that out. I'm guessing it's no coincidence that she was chosen as the director for this particular ep...
Tash   |2010-01-24 23:26:08
That was one of the funniest (in a good way) reviews I've read.

It was just pure awesomeness.

It didnt phase me that much that Arizona lied, you are getting all steamy with your girlfriend to suddenly fine out in a hour she's gonna be all gross... not the best thing to imagine when you're frustrated lol.

What I wouldv'e like, was if she went in when Mark was there instead saying 'It should be me in there'... why not go in then?

But overall a great episode and more of this (sexy not poxy) stuff in the future please.

Admin   |2010-01-25 01:37:45
Thanks so much, Tash!

I was hoping when I first watched that part that she would just go in and take over when Mark was there. But I guess it would've looked bad to just barge in the second she sees Mark there, especially since she would've had to either confess that she lied or pretend that she was braving the pox to take care of her (which would've made her unrealistically heroic).
Tash   |2010-01-25 04:00:02
True, it still would've been nice if she did though, even if she made Little Grey go in and pretend she needed to talk to Mark lol.

I do love Mark and Callie's friendship though, so I can live with it I guess
Callie   |2010-01-24 23:40:29
Hi, me again, the "other" Callie

Love the review, as always. And I don't think Arizona's lie is necessarily out of character... she can't be perfect all the time. We've already seen several of Callie's flaws (though, I still adore her, of course!). Perfection all the time is boring.

But, I do agree that the fact that she'd lie over something so trivial was somewhat perplexing. lol. Oh, well, we still love her anyway.

And the highlight of the show was most definitely the on-call room... and the cuddling in the end. I'm really loving the way things are going and hope that the writers keep this up! No more hiding of the lesbian romance!
Elocing     |2010-01-25 00:40:37
A great review!!! I was looking forward to reading this since the episode.

I think that Arizona's comment in the gallery was sooo sexy. I was shocked that they included that, but then when the on call room scene came on I couldn't even gather my thoughts for at least half of the episode after

I think that the lie and the avoiding the sickness was very out of character for Arizona. Come on she's "a good man in a storm"!!! Ummm that was a drizzle and she bailed.

But the writers were more concerned with the Lexie Mark drama playing out so they sacrificed a bit of Arizona's integrity for that.

But alas, of course we forgive her!

I agree that these writers are a little behind on Calzona. They have been together nearly a year! Come on.

P.S. Callie biting her lip was so sexy.
Admin   |2010-01-25 04:12:07
Thanks, Elocing!

I know.. I just had to screencap that lip-biting moment. Well, as you can see, it was screencaps galore in this week's review. It was hard to pick which shots to include. Heh.

Loved this. It was a very snappy way of getting the point across well. Rock on!

How can Callie have the Chicken Pox and still look so damn sexy?
Audrey   |2010-01-25 01:00:50
Lovely review, Meg, as usual .

I have to admit, I was a little bit shocked by Arizona's initial reaction too. But after careful reexamination, I get it. It wasn't right, but I get it.

I do believe that they're still keeping in tune with the character of Arizona. Yes, she was the one to help Callie through her dad's rejection of her, and through George's death, but I feel like she's always been hesitant. Even when she was helping Callie through all that, she was hesitant, not always knowing what to do (ie. paging Mark to help Callie in "Sweet Surrender", telling Callie to "eat donuts" to cope with George's death, having to confirm their relationship status, etc.) It takes Arizona time to really process and understand a situation, and then to jump in and actively participate.

The writers portrayed Arizona very realistically in this episode. Let's face it, no one wants to be around a sick person, even if that sick person is the love of your life. It would've been unrealistic to have Arizona automatically jump in and be like "Yeah, Callie, I love it when you're sick. I'm gonna be here and I'm gonna coddle you". It's just not who Arizona is.

I think the most important part of this episode was the end game. In the end, Arizona did come around, like she always does (ie. eventually asking Callie out on a date, eventually comforting Callie and making that wonderful speech to Papa Torres, etc.)

As Arizona admits, herself, "Sometimes I panic in the moment, and I call it wrong. I misjudge a situation". In this case, Arizona panicked, and she lied, but eventually she came around, realized her mistake and tried to fix it.

On another, totally unrelated note, I literally started crying because I was laughing so hard at the "I have pox between my butt cheeks" line. Seriously, Sara, how do you do it?

The banter between Callie and Arizona was amazing as well. Seriously, these two are pure comedic gold. Another reason why they're so meant to be.
Admin   |2010-01-25 01:27:00
Hey Audrey.. I appreciate your thoughtful comments, especially for citing all those examples. Those instances certainly show that she's hesitant and sometimes unsure of how to react. I do want to note that handing her off to Mark, eating donuts, and confirming their relationship status all happened before the 3rd episode of the season. These things are certainly expected from being in a relatively new relationship. After having confirmed their status, though, one would expect their relationship to have grown stronger from the 4th episode until now, the 12th. I would fully expect Arizona to freak out over the pox if it had happened in the first couple of eps of season 3, but after the heartfelt "I Love You's", I can't imagine that the sight of chicken pox would deter Arizona from taking care of Callie, especially since she's shown to be a really caring type of person. I don't expect her to be all lovey-dovey and make googly eyes at Callie when she's all poxy, but I really thought that she would do what's expected of a girlfriend, given that they've been together for some time now.

I do remember her saying that sometimes she panics and calls it wrong. But to intentionally lie about it seems a little bizarre as she herself was disgusted by Cristina when she lied to her in 6.03.

Whatever her intentions were, I'm relieved that she fixed it at the end. Onwards and upwards!

Thanks for reading and again, thanks for your and everyone else's comments. I had a feeling that my review would generate a lot of discussion. We are all so very passionate about Callie & Arizona.
berryjam   |2010-01-25 01:26:45
I think that it would be too quick to assume that the lie was out of character for Arizona. Because even when the character is already introduced and pretty much defined, we still don't know everything about her (and it would be quite boring predictable and not suited for tv drama if we did). I think it was more of an introduction of a flaw in the character that maybe will be used later to create the couple's drama (that we know is coming )

My take on it is a little deeper and perhaps over analized.

Caring for a sick girlfriend could be a big thing, is kind of playing house or wife. Perhaps Arizona is not ready for that step. They are girlfriends, love each other and are in a season in the relationship where everything is perfect, sexy and without drama (yet).

Loved all their scenes. They are hawt!!!

I absolutely love Callie. Sara Ramirez is all the things Arizona said about Callie. And yes I confess "I can't keep my eyes off of her."
Admin   |2010-01-25 01:51:49
Hi berryjam!

Interesting point about a character flaw being introduced for use down the road. It reminds me of a flaw (if you can call it that) that was introduced in "Invest In Love", which is that Arizona seems to withhold a lot of things and tries to always be the supportive one, to the point that the other person sort of expects this stability from her and doesn't know how to handle it when AZ gets into stressful situations and needs support (for instance, when they argued in Callie's apartment, she sounded somewhat resentful that she helped Callie thru crisis after crisis, and she thought that for once, she could go there for support). I don't think it's by accident that she chose those words. It seems to me that it's been on her mind and she just couldn't hold back under stress.

It seems that she's always the strong one for Callie to rely on and tends to internalize her feelings until under extreme stress. I can see that blowing up into a potential major communication issue in the future.

I know... that was quite a tangent. Heh.
AJ   |2010-01-25 02:30:42
great review Meg.

I've been thinking a little about the characterisation of Arizona. The writers have been a bit inconsistent with the relationship and Arizona, but that's typical of Grey's as a whole.

My first reaction after the ep was that Arizona is a "fixer". She might be a good man in a storm, but maybe not always emotionally (eg when Cristina was in peds - she said that she doesn't always see things in relation to other people and their actions/motivations), and with things that aren't fixable or require a definite action.

So far they've shown that she sometimes reacts to new problems by running away or closing down until she can think about the solution. Then she comes back into the fray and 'fixes' it.

Certainly Callie having the Chicken Pox was a situation that wasn't fixable, there was nothing she could do...until later in the episode when she figured out that comforting Callie was enough.

It also could be that she simply doesn't do "sick" people - it's her hurdle. Strange thing for a doctor, but then surgeons tend to be dealing with sick people in a different way - it's usually nurses dealing with the real icky oozy, gross stuff.

but I'm sure I'll rewatch the ep and some earlier ones and change my mind.

Bre   |2010-01-25 12:12:46
Very interesting points, AJ!

I see Arizona more as someone who takes burden upon herself and may tend to internalize it. As for "good man in a storm" I feel like it fundamentally pertains to Arizona being there to support Callie and is backed up by her actions when Papa Torres comes to town and when Callie is trying to get her job back. I agree with Meg that it makes more sense for this to have happened earlier in the relationship. The timing feels a bit wacky. Honestly, it felt more like a PD than anything used to really define fears about her own perception of their relationship.
Admin   |2010-01-26 03:45:40
Thanks, AJ.

I like your point about doctors not used to dealing with sick people in a way that nurses would on a daily basis.

Really nice review Meg! I really liked this episode for two things. First, I loved that Calzona actually looks like a really couple in Grey's Anatomy. Second, I thought it was really awesome how Arizona knew what Callie would say to Lexie to try to get her way. When Lexie came in to distract Callie with work, Callie told her that she was her attending/boss, and Lexie said that Arizona already told her she was going to say that, and Arizona was her boss, not Callie. It just shows how well Callie and Arizona know each other. The whole chicken pox thing was just really, really funny. The ending was so sweet too.
I found an interview with Jessica Capshaw, and I didn't know if it was already on this website. The interview is about what Jessica thinks of Tiffany's jewelery.

Thanks for the review Meg! No Grey's next week. =/

Thanks, mel!

Yeah.. they finally look like a couple now. Now was that so hard, Shonda & ABC? It is really cute that AZ could predict how Callie would be with the pox.

Hi Meg!

This review was awesomesauce!

My all-time favorite part of this whole episode (that wasnt the epic makeout session) was... "Take off mah gauze paws" by Callie! The comedic timing on those 5 words was so amazing I did a spittake with a mouthful of pizza! (that may have been TMI but it had to be said. )

Question: Who else cant stop listening to the song that was playing behind the awesomeest 30 seconds ever!

Re the whole Arizona lied omg thing: I think you are totally right Meg! I think the show was scared to be like ahh 2 chicks that they focused on the huge monumental things like comming out to the parents and all that drama that they forgot the little things that we should have seen before that! it was nice that they put it in there it was just poorly placed. (not that greys is prized on its continuity )

I dont think her lying was to avoid Callie cause she was all gross and she wanted to only see her as sexy or in the sexy times. I think that she wasnt confident she could show her that she was still sexy even with the ooze and stuff. She didnt realize until mark could do that by just being with her that she didnt need the hot on-call room stuff to have a sexy time with her especially when she was sick or something. That make sense in my brain so I thought I'd see if that made sense anywhere else..

As usual meg you show me things I did know and enlighten me on the things I didnt. YAY!
AJ   |2010-01-25 04:28:13
heh - that song isn't really my type of music, but it's been on my exercise playlist for a while. It shuffled on while I was running yesterday and I now find it a bit distracting! And I think the grin on my face also disturbed my friend.
Think I'll have to take it off the list, since I'm not the most co-ordinated person out there and will probably have an accident.
Admin   |2010-01-26 03:43:53
HA.. that's a funny mental picture. I can imagine you veering off the path with the grin plastered on your face.

Hey Cel! Thank you!

Interesting perspective... that is certainly a possibility. Hmmm...

Great review Meg, like always .

It's really funny/probably going to sound really stupid on my part, but I didn't even really think about the Arizona-lying thing the first time I watched the episode...I say first because I have rewatched some parts over again .

Perhaps it was because I was just so excited/surprised they were showing so much of Callie and Arizona that I was finding it heard to really think about anything

Anyways haha...after watching some stuff over again, reading this, and hearing some of my friends opinions (who aren't quite as umm...entranced lol by them) I'm still not really sure what I think about the whole Arizona thing.

I felt like this was a realistic situation, but I'm not sure if it was a realistic situation for Arizona's character, or especially for Arizona and Callie's relationship. I understand that Arizona has flaws. She's only human, but this just seemed kind of off. I can see her being grossed out if this was a first date or something, or if they hadn't already faced so many obstacles together or dated for so long. I mean, I know there haven't been many situations where there's really been a chance for Arizona to show a "superficial" side, so I guess it could make sense...

I guess I'll have to see what happens with them in the future, but right now I'm going to look at it as more of a one-time slip up thing. More of a because there relationship was so stable, and because Arizona think Callie is miraculous, she was just worried of anything messing it up, and she didn't want to take her chances, even if it was something small like the Chicken Pox. I think the fact that Arizona ended up going to be with Callie in the end made it a little better though.

I kind of hope thought that this comes up in the future though. Maybe Arizona has the capability of lying about something trivial, but I don't see her being able to keep the lie a secret.

Okay and on a sidenote..did anyone think Callie telling Mark not to tell Lexie he slept with Addison was a little strange? I mean I know she's had issues with it before, but you'd think that after being the person who was cheated on when George slept with Izzie and confessing to Erika that she slept with Mark that maybe she would have learned her lesson. Maybe not though.

I feel like no matter what Arizona or Callie do I won't be able to help, but love them

Holy Crap. That was a crazy amount. Like crazy I want to make a suit out of someone else's skin crazy.
Admin   |2010-01-26 04:07:09
Hey Chloe, thanks for commenting! It's a lot, but you still made it under the character limit, unlike some people. Just kidding, Bre.. we all love your letters...

Yeah, that's why I felt a little unsettled while watching it. It's possible that she's scared of messing it up.. Anyway, it's not a big deal in the overall picture, I suppose.

Yeah, I was intrigued by that. She seemed pretty certain that keeping it from the other person was the way to go to avoid drama. I question her advice though as I would imagine that it would eat away at both Mark and Lexie.
Bre   |2010-01-25 11:04:26
I think I am going to take this opportunity to write a few letters. *clears throat*

Dear Meg,

your reviews never cease to be astute, insightful, full of well thought out logic and/or theories, and are ever so cleverly funny. As always, thank you and keep up the superior Calzona coverage. (there may be some black ops Callie and Arizona in this for you ;-)Just sayin')

Dear Tony Phelan and Joan Rater,

There's this thing and it's called a calendar and while I will wholeheartedly admit that your jobs are not easy, (I can't imagine working under such deadlines and high expectations) I still wish that you would have checked the date (or reread the previous scripts) and realized where we were in the over all story arc. We're deep into this relationship so it would be awesome if you would give us a heads up when you were going to throw Arizona under a bus... sorry, I mean, use Arizona as a plot device. Seriously love you guys but that one was mystifying. I've had an easier time doing the NYTimes crossword than I've had figuring out how this fits into the story/character. Oh and did you even use your medical consultant on this one?

P.S. Was that Brooke Smith reference on purpose? Pox-gate has a whole new weird factor if it was.

Dear Sara Ramirez,

If I didn't know better I would think you were really going to jump Jessica Capshaw's bones there. Ahem, good job on making an enthusiastic case for on call room fun. Oh, and I would like to give you a truck load of points for the crazy pox scene. "Take off my gauze paws" is now my ring tone. I bow down to the mistress... no goddess of comedic timing on Grey's.

Dear Shonda,

So, you have really injected your life into the story line this time. I have to wonder if it was written exactly as it happened because if that was the reason for having Arizona lie (beyond the big PD) then it bloody well looked like it came from left field. It was an incredibly hilarious and effective story apart from that, so thanks!

To whom it may concern,

I understand everyone's need to rationalize Arizona's behavior and that may lead us all to different conclusions. Each of us calls it like we see it and I am so glad that we have a place like this to discuss it. (again thanks to Meg) I've talked this subject to death recently and after taking a step back I really think that Pox-gate (as I like to fondly refer to it) was simply a way to get from one point to another, to use Shonda's real life story line in a fun way, and to give Arizona a trait that was less than saintly. I am utterly in favor of character flaws but I want them to make sense contextually and to fit in with the timeline. That being said, if this is brought up in future episodes I hope it is explained/fits better.

Dear Arizona,

Seriously?! First, your girlfriend may not be the most observant person but she is still has a medical degree. I think she is going to figure out why you did not get the pox. Judging from the way you two have been sexing it up in the last two episodes I think it is pretty clear that you've been swapping a fair amount of saliva. Unless your immune system is god like I think the conclusion is fairly conspicuous. In fact, I'm not so sure Callie didn't already have an inkling that something was rotten in the Southwest (ugh, I'm horrible) at the end of the episode. Tell her and I bet it will all go away or hey, take her advice to Mark and keep your trap shut.

Dear Callie,

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... sorry, sorry. I'm done.

Dear JCap and Sara R,

Thank you, you and the writers have given us the first lesbian couple on primetime network TV since Willow and Tara (Buffy) to be portrayed in such a positive and normalizing manner. It is through visibility and familiarity that the public becomes used to or aware of the idea of LGBT people. There may be those who willfully misunderstand and who will blatantly spread lies about the fundamental truth of our community, that truth being that we want the same thing...
Bre   |2010-01-25 11:09:43
HEY!! I wasn't done! *glare* Anyway, as I was saying...

s as everyone else, but I am proud that there are actresses out there who take on the roles with honesty, vivacious demeanors, and true understanding. Visibility matters. Thanks

JCap,

You practically made us all faint with your hotness in this episode. From that not so whispered offer of a cure to the dialogue that you delivered about how Arizona finds Callie miraculous, you drew us into the magical world of your character. I doubt many could deliver the line, "I find her miraculous... breathtakingly stunning. I just.. can't stop looking at her" and sell it with the perfect amount of sincerity and warmth. Bravo.

Okay, I'm done! Aren't you all glad I have to go to bed now?! HA
AJ   |2010-01-25 16:27:06
lol Bre. excellent points! I think you summed everything up perfectly
Bre   |2010-01-25 22:42:45
Haha, thanks AJ.
Tash   |2010-01-25 16:59:34
Haha, love it!
Chloe   |2010-01-25 19:30:37
lol I love your comment/review/personalized letters. Put my "long" post to shame haha.
Bre   |2010-01-25 22:44:27
Na, just means I've A) thought about this way too much have too much time on my hands and C) am just crazy enough to write letters to these people and put them out in public. Thanks Chloe.

Oh, and somehow I have a need to make Meg's comment length limitation to shame.
Admin   |2010-01-26 03:59:28
Bre, you nut! Do you realize how many times I've had to increase the character limit already? I seriously fear what will happen if I were to make it unlimited.

As usual, lovely and in-depth comments. It also cracked me up. Well, you've pretty much said it all, and I agree with everything, especially how well Jessica delivered that line about Callie being miraculous and breathtakingly stunning. It's amazing that she can always turn a potentially corny line into something sincere.

It's also funny that we now have reviews on the comments on the review. Awesome, and well deserved.
Bre   |2010-01-26 09:47:29
I am all in favor of the character limitations, it gives me something to shoot for.

Thanks but I fear you've heard it all before. LOL You know me, I don't do short winded. I think its fabulous that we have enough people who really care about this couple and are jumping in to discuss. Fun times.
Stacy   |2010-01-25 19:21:11
Meg,
Did you do reviews of last season's episodes? They are not listed on reviews page. If you have done them, could you please make them available, and if you haven't, could you be talked into re-watching last season's episodes and writing reviews?
Bre   |2010-01-25 22:44:55
Ohhhh, good question.
Admin   |2010-01-26 03:31:38
Hey Stacy! Haha, no, I don't have season 5 reviews written up and stashed somewhere.

Howeverrr... I just might start on that once this season is over so that we can get through the long long hiatus. I'll probably start with the Callie & Arizona-heavy episodes first.
Maggie   |2010-01-26 01:05:58
I have to say, I watched the ep in a rerun on Saturday night, and I STILL don't quite remember everything that happened! On-call room makeout time TOTALLY trumps everything else in my book. I thought both Callie and Arizona were great in this episode. I really like seeing the dominant side of Arizona come out, since I don't know about you, but Callie SEEMS like the one who would take control. I was also a huge fan of both Sara and Jessica's comedic timing in the episode; they're both wonderful comic actresses and it was great to see them both get to shine.

As for the Arizona-lying-about-having-the-chicken-pox deal...I would have to say I understand why she did what she did. Personally, I have a "thing" about oozing sores and the like; I don't really like them much. At all. I can sort of understand why Arizona wanted to "stay in the sexy part of things" and not deal with the oozing and the scratching. I'm not saying it was the RIGHT thing to do, but everyone has some flaws somewhere!

Great review!
Admin   |2010-01-26 04:09:44
Thanks, Maggie! They both have impeccable comedic timing. AND can pull off all the dramatic scenes. I'm glad the writers give them good material to work with.
Yucata   |2010-01-26 14:19:54
I really like the scene between Callie and Lexie, the "take my gaze paws" line of course but also Callie trying different techniques on Lexie: ordering her as an attending, begging...
and it's cute that Arizona has planned everything that Callie would say
Gauze Paws   |2010-01-27 03:30:22

I've seen it before and I really liked it as well, especially since it has a lot of clips rarely used in fanvids.

Jessica and Sara are both so incredibly animated when they act.
gauze paws   |2010-01-26 17:31:15
maybe it's just me, but I would of paid money to see the scene where they put the gauze paws onto Callie...perhaps the GA budget couldn't afford the extras it would have taken to hold her down!!
Jade   |2010-01-26 17:35:08
Oh Meg, that was an awesome review! You got me laughing so hard i almost fell off my chair.

And before i say anything else, the scene in the on-call room was HOT. Like maggie said, i always thought callie would be the dominant one(even though AZ's assertive and all).. but behold! it sure looks like arizona is not one to relinquish control even in the bedroom

Re the whole lying thing: i too felt like it was a bit out of character for arizona to lie over something so trivial (considering the fact that they've been together for almost a year now). Would've made more sense if this happened much, much earlier.

Honestly, i didnt know what to think during that scene. On one hand, i was like, "what? she lied about having chicken pox because of that?" And yet on the other hand, the "i find her miraculous" speech that Arizona gave while looking lovingly at callie was so heartfelt i found myself going "awww". Seriously, how Jcap manages to turn a (rather) corny speech into sth so sweet is beyond me.

My heart melted again when Arizona climbed into bed and kissed Callie on the cheeks. Personally, i found that scene to be really sweet. I think it has to do with Arizona's apologetic look and the kissing on the cheeks (and shoulder and hair). For me, that was pretty important. The fact that Arizona kissed callie's pox-covered cheeks (then kissed her again and again) proved that she's genuinely sorry and finally realized what's important.. (though i still felt like the arizona we know wouldn't freak out over chicken pox..esp after the declaration of ILYs...but oh well)

That being said, i also wish they could come up with a character flaw that is more consistent with how arizona's being portrayed so far... Come to think about it, that task alone won't be easy. Arizona has already been labeled as the "good man in the storm". Viewers have high expectations and i wonder how people are going to react if they ever make arizona do something that is borderline unethical..
Admin   |2010-01-27 03:20:51
Haha.. thanks so much, Jade! Glad you liked it! Don't injure yourself on my account, though.

I could've easily rolled my eyes at the "miraculous" speech had someone else delivered it. Thank goodness Jessica is into subtle.

Well, I hope the writers don't make AZ do something unethical for the sole purpose of creating drama. Conflicts are okay as long as they are somewhat realistic and not contrived.
Swedish fish   |2010-01-27 08:31:46
Hey guys!

Great reviews

That really worries me too Admin (Meg?) that they will create an unrealistic and out of charcter drama for Arizona and Callie. Just for no other purpose than creating drama...

I really REALLY like the stabil, funloving, sexy stage of their relationship they're in right now. And how we actually get to see that they're a real couple!

I would be so mad if the writers mess it up just as we get to see some actual couplely emotion and interaction between them. I need more of scenes like the stairwell kiss, the comforting and effection on the park bench and after the Papa Torres attack, the I love yous, the shower scene and the hot on-call room scene. It's not enough. Other couples get alooot of sexy screen time. A & C get like 3 secs every time

But we're getting there I hope...
Swedish fish   |2010-01-29 21:27:07
Hey... again.

Read somewhere that Arizona was one of the narrators of 6x12!?

Anyone know? Where?
Admin   |2010-01-30 00:17:44
Hey Swedish fish... no, don't think she narrated in 6.12. The only time I remember hearing her narrate was in 6.02, during the scene when she's meeting up with Callie at the bar.
Swedish fish   |2010-01-30 13:44:59
Ah... weird.

Though hopefully they'll use her more in the future! 'cause her voice is amazing and as we stated before, her monologues fantastic!

*cross my fingers*

I have been watching Grey's Anatomy since Arizona and Callie started I am love with the show. I love your episode reviews, I will be coming back here to get the latest Callie and Arizona news

Hi Sarah! Thanks a lot!

For sure, Callie & Arizona have got me obsessed with the show.

That's great! Thanks for visiting!

Thanks so much for your comment, Alyssa!

And thanks for reading!

Hi Admin, (Meg?),
I don't really post comments on sites -- this is my first as a matter of fact, so I have to apologise now coz it's long!

REALLY enjoy your reviews. Your attention to detail on Calzona scenes are great. Don't worry about being 'obsessive', I think most of us fans are the same and appreciate the additional observations.

Here in UK, we're only on S6E4 so thank you very much for your videos too! My partner and I discovered Calzona only 3 weeks ago (didn't used to watch Greys), so we've been catching up on S5 eps via youtube.

A lot has been said about how incredibly talented JCap and Sara is, and I wholeheartedly agree. I am very impressed with JCap in particular, because I saw her in the L Word and her portrayal in those few scenes with that other hot woman (Jennifer Beals) is SO different to Arizona. They are literally two different people for me.

I think JBeals said it before that for an intimate scene to work, both actresses need to be "truthful" to the scene, because any hesitation on their part will translate so obviously on screen. The Calzona scenes are so wonderful because both JCap and Sara really deliver without any awkwardness.

Regarding this episode, I noticed "Callie's sexy biting of her lower lip near the end, just as Arizona examines the spots on her chest" too! Plus, when Arizona pulls Callie's sleeve up to check her arm, Callie is still leaning towards Arizona for another kiss, but didn't quite get there coz that's when Arizona shoves Callie's arm back at her.

I have to say, after nearly 5 years of angst-ridden TiBette (with barely half a season where we finally see them at least happy together), it is so very refreshing to see a lesbian couple that is just "happy". Yes, they have the occasional spat which happens in any relationship, but they're never intentionally mean or horrible to each other, which in my book is always a good sign.

On the subject of Arizona's lie, I'm not actually that bothered by it because I don't think it's a "major" lie in terms of honesty in relationships. Maybe I'm weird but I don't think it's possible for anyone to ALWAYS say the truth about everything, especially about a "little" thing like this. I like that Arizona's not a perfect girlfriend who does everything right all the time -- although so far, she's pretty darn perfect to me!

I don't know much about Callie's past, just snippets from previous eps so can't say much about her character, but she seems honestly happy to be with Arizona. Hopefully, it stays this way for a long time because happy lesbian couples on TV/movies are so very rare!!

Thank you for allowing me to ramble on.
Lucy
Admin   |2010-02-17 03:14:09
Thanks for commenting, Lucy! Always great to hear from new Callie & Arizona fans!

Really glad that you enjoy the reviews. Believe me, I have a lot of fun breaking everything down into minute detail.

Being new to Grey's, you missed the disaster that was Hahn and Callie. The way the writers handled their storyline was painful to watch. I don't know how far back in S5 you went, but after the Hahn/Callie storyline, it makes the Calzone one that much sweeter.

And yes, JCap and Sara have a ton of chemistry. I love that they act so naturally on a regular basis, contrary to the lesbian ratings stunts that shows love to pull. And this role is by far one that JCap has been most suited to. So kudos to the writers for seeing that.

A long-suffering TiBetter, I see.. I was a Dana/Alice shipper myself, but we all know how that turned out.

It is lovely to see a happy lesbian couple on screen for once. I'm sure drama is coming, but the way their relationship has been written, it feels like the real thing to us. Shonda compared them to MerDer, the flagship couple, so that's promising.

Again, appreciate your comment. It's not that long.. have you seen the other ones? And yeah, it's Meg.
Lucy   |2010-02-16 22:01:53
Sorry, forgot to say...

RE "outbreak monkey", I'm pretty sure it's a reference to the movie "Outbreak", where a monkey is the source of a mystery disease that spread rapidly.

So I don't think Arizona was comparing Callie to a monkey, but rather to a source of infection.

Okay, I'll go sleep now.
Lucy
Admin   |2010-02-17 01:41:54
Hehe... yeah, I remembered it's from that movie, too. Legit term or not, I can't imagine that it feels sexy to be called that.
