My Review of 6.08 - "Invest In Love" E-mail

So Grey's is back on top among the 18 to 49 age group this week.  I am glad that the World Series was over and people caught this wonderful episode.  Read on for my full review.  It's a lengthy one!

Ah…."Invest In Love".. the episode which every Callie & Arizona fan pinned all their hopes and dreams on.  In the end, we got more than we expected. I am still basking in the high from so much Arizona and Callie and being overwhelmed by the intensity with which the scenes were delivered.

Sure, there were some confounding moments, but on the whole, as a Callie & Arizona fan, the episode blew me away. It feels surreal, still, that we were treated to an Arizona-centric hour.

The writers, to their credit, are good at recognizing talent and potential when they see it.  They saw JCap's talent and the depth that she can bring to a character, and in Arizona, they saw the potential to develop a complex and interesting character.  As such, both Jessica and Arizona were deserving of the spotlight.

This week, we got to see Arizona run through a gamut of emotions. And Jessica nailed every scene, a lot of times with just her eyes alone.  I have to say that Jessica Capshaw has one of the most expressive sets of eyes in the business.  Brava to Jessica for her nuanced performance that did justice to such a complex character as Arizona.

And onto the episode...

It was a very promising start when they showed Callie & Arizona within the first 30 seconds of the episode.

In Callie's bedroom, the pager starts beeping, causing Arizona to jolt awake while Callie continues to snore and snort on her side of the bed.  AZ fumbles for the pager, hoping it is not intended for her and breathes a sigh of relief.  She returns under the covers and proceeds to elbow-shove Callie off the edge of the bed. Well, that's certainly one way to wake up your girlfriend. Unfortunately for Arizona, or perhaps karma for her treatment of Callie a couple of seconds ago, Arizona's pager goes off as well.  What can I say, except that AZ is the epitome of cuteness with the "I'm sleeping!" as she wraps the pillow around her head.

Frankly, they had me at the bedroom scene.  Even if the rest of the episode was crap (which it wasn't), I still would've been happy with it. Heh.  Also, they win the award for most adorable being-woken-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night scene, hands down. Any scene with these two is never dull.  Nice to get confirmation that AZ is practically living there now.  Guess we missed the U-Haul conversation.

The next thing we know, they are barreling down the hallway with their respective stretchers trying to beat the other to the only open OR (with their passengers fearing more from dying in a stretcher collision than from their inherent injuries).  Remind me to avoid getting into a road race with them at all costs. These women are vicious.

After the brutal unscheduled midnight shift, everyone (including Callie, Owen, and Cristina) gathers for a pediatric rotation.  AZ, hyped up on caffeine, could not resist taking a jab at Cristina, "Okay, I know that this is the first time on a Peds rotation with me for some of you. Not for others."

The looks of love between Callie & Arizona throughout the episode are unmistakable.  Cristina, on the other hand, appears utterly repulsed by this fairy talk.

At the meeting requested by Wallace's parents, it was a little disheartening to see the way Jennings treating Arizona and AZ looking so scared and worried.  However, all is good when we find out that they are pledging to donate $25 million to Seattle Grace Mercy West.

The breakfast scene was fun to watch. I am all for the continuing interaction between Callie & Arizona with the rest of the cast.  Arizona (whose dress style I really like, btw) goes on chirpily about the $25 million donation as Callie whips up these customized breakfasts for Owen and Cristina.  Awkwardness, however, ensues when Lexie, ever so dependable in creating these moments, blurts out that Arizona's birthday is on Friday.

Callie: "How come Little Grey knows about your birthday and I don't?"

Uh, Callie, a better question would be, how come you never bothered to ask Arizona?

To borrow Mark's wisdom, it says more about you than about her.

Arizona says in one breath that birthdays are just like any other days and that she doesn't like them and doesn't celebrate them. She makes a quick escape from the scene, citing that she's late for work and gives Callie a quick peck on the cheek. Yes, I say cheek, because it was indeed not on the lips.  They cannot fool us with the faraway shot and the weird angle;  you could see that Callie's face was turned a little to the left as AZ pecks her.  So yes, I am still waiting for the first kiss on the lips this season.

Callie then surveys the group on whether she was expected to do something for AZ's birthday, with the typical varying responses from Owen/Cristina/Lexie. Mark's, however, was a little eyebrow-raising: "Whoa..ho…bad idea. Surprise parties are hostile. They are dark..people jump out and scream at you.. they never come to any good."  Huh.

Also, I'm intrigued by Arizona's aversion to birthdays because that just does not come about for no reason. I hope they follow up on this with a backstory in the future.

At the hospital, Arizona is faced with a difficult decision, one with really no favorable alternatives. It appears that she's doomed whether she does the surgery or not. In the end, she has no choice but to succumb to the combination of the hospital powers that be, the pleading parents, and the realization that they would probably take their son elsewhere to undergo surgery if she refuses.  We see the first glimpse of AZ lacking her usual confidence and conviction.

Callie finds Arizona standing by herself outside the hospital looking a bit lost just before the surgery.  Arizona solicits support from Callie in the form of asking to be told that she's "great".  In what could have been a cheesy scene given the writing, Jessica pulled it off with such sincerity and this subtly growing level of confidence with each time she's told that she's great, that the scene worked for me.

Unfortunately, AZ's belief starts to crumble again as she goes to take Wallace into the OR, when Wallace questions his mortality.

In one of the most powerful scenes of the episode, Arizona is waiting for Callie at her apartment after her initial surgery on Wallace.  I had been waiting for the build-up to this moment, in which everything that Arizona has been repressing for the sake of being strong for Callie finally comes to a head.  A meltdown is inevitable.  There is so much emotion packed behind AZ's expression; her face a mixture of anger, pain, fear, irrationality, resentment, and a hint of feeling betrayed.  Anger from being in a situation that she could not control and that Callie was not there, fear of being in a losing battle against hospital politics and not able to save Wallace, and the realistic build-up of pain and resentment against Callie and feeling of betrayal that she is always the one giving and not getting enough in return.  All the feelings that AZ usually sweeps under the rug comes to the surface in this raw display of emotion, which made my heart break a little.  We finally got to see the real her.  It doesn't make her a lesser person; it makes her more human.  I am in awe of JCap for pulling off all of those emotions on her face in those few short seconds.  The way she said, "I have helped you through crisis after crisis" was especially poignant.

It is a shame that Owen and Cristina had to burst in; I would have loved to see the emotions continue to pour out of AZ.  The four-way argument that ensues was interesting, however, especially when AZ, who was unravelli ng just a few moments ago, snaps back to her authoritative mode at the mention of "a child".  I love feisty Arizona.  AZ's pager goes off and she leaves for the hospital.

Back at the hospital, AZ valiantly tries to save Wallace, who went into septic shock while the Chief makes an ill-advised offer to "help" Arizona.  Arizona has had enough of the politics and screams at him with daggers in her eyes:

"NO! No, you can't! Because as long as you are standing there, breathing over my shoulder, I feel like I'm operating on a stack of dollar bills. Twenty-five million dollar bills.  And what I need to be invested in right now is this kid. So please, get the hell out of my OR!!"

Wow, that's a breakthrough. Begone, issues with authority!

Sadly, but not unexpectedly, Wallace did not make it off the table.  You see a stoic AZ come out, having blocked off all the avenues through which her feelings could pour forth.  JCap is absolutely incredible here.. you see AZ so closed off yet with so much bubbling under.

Arizona comes home to what could be the worst-timed surprise party in history. She has barely held herself together throughout the Wallace ordeal all night, that when confronted with the surprise, the thought of a party for herself on th e same day as Wallace's birthday, who is now lying in the morgue instead, pushes her off the edge and she bursts into tears and flees.  Once again, I am rendered speechless by Jessica's performance, her expression evolving from shock to heartbreak in mere seconds.  It hurts to watch AZ.  Callie, equally shocked for the reason that she has never seen AZ in this state before, goes into a stupor before coming to her senses to run after her.

Now, I really adored this episode - I really do - but there were a couple of things in the ep that just cannot go unaddressed, and this is one of them.  I cannot, for the life of me, comprehend Callie's reaction (or lack of) to Arizona's breakdown outside her apartment.  Yes, I get that Arizona has been a rock to an almost invincible degree ever since the start of their relationship, and Callie would be understandably taken aback at seeing AZ in such a vulnerable state.  However, after Callie ran down and AZ revealed that Wallace died, Callie seems to have recovered from that initial shock and has since adopted a calm expression on her face.  So I find it inexcusable and incomprehensible that Callie did not give AZ a hug. I simply don't get it.  How is a hug of comfort between two people in a lesbian relationship sensational or lascivious in any way?  I think it's a lot more disturbing for any audience to witness the distant demeanor from Callie.  I was screaming at the TV, "HUG HER!!!" to no avail.  And Callie seemed more concerned about holding down the fort at her own party than AZ's emotional state.  How did she know that AZ even wanted to be alone? She didn't even offer to talk it through with AZ .  In the words of Bette, I am frankly…just <bleeping> flabbergasted by Callie's reaction.

Arizona returns to the hospital and cautiously approaches Wallace's old room.  The Chief finally does something right this season by standing up for Arizona to Jennings.

What follows is an incredibly moving scene in the morgue.  When Wallace's mom breaks down in the middle of the rhyme, Arizona takes over.

Wallace's mom: " Bad dreams, bad dreams, go away. Good dreams, good dreams, here to stay…." <starts sobbing>

Arizona: "Good dreams, good dreams, here to stay.  Bad dreams, bad dreams, go away. Good dreams, good dreams, here to stay.  Bad dreams, bad dreams, go away. Good dreams, good dreams, here to stay. You have to do it three times.."

Wallace's dad: "...for it to work. I know."

Somehow, I believe it's as cathartic for Wallace's mom as it is for Arizona, especially given her own history of nightmares.  Beautiful scene.

Arizona comes home quietly and now appears to be more at peace with the ordeal. She walks by and notices Callie's lingerie-clad sleeping form on the sofa.  You know the look on someone's face, when they think no one is watching them, is the most honest and the truest reflection of their heart?  In this case, you could tell by AZ's expression that her heart is brimmed with so much love that it just takes her breath away.  Callie comes awake as AZ sets down her keys on the side table.

Callie: "Oh! I'm awake....I'm I'm..see...I'm..I'm totally awake. And, there's hats.. and gifts... and..and donuts, and lingerie, and [blows on horn but produces no sound]...Really?!??!"

I love that little look with the eyes that AZ gave Callie during her shenanigans with the horn (it harks back to that night in the bathroom at Joe's when Callie asked, "You want to give me some names?" It's AZ's, "oh, you silly girl… " type of look).

The profession of love at that particular time was a surprise to me given the goofy things that Callie was doing. And I loved it.  The way Arizona said it so softly, so tenderly, so matter-of-factly, as though she has known that in her heart for so long already, made me all crumbly inside.  Callie's expression was one of complete shock, then one of fear that she had heard incorrectly and needed confirmation.  AZ continued to look at Callie with such love and tenderness as she affirmed that she does.   I was holding my breath as I wasn't sure whether Callie would say it back. Thank goodness she opened up her long-suffering heart to love again.  Jessica and Sara acted that scene to perfection.  Yes, a long soulful kiss after their profession of love would've been a nice bonus, but I'm more than happy with the on-screen "I love you's".

Arizona: "I love you."

Callie: "... you do?"

Arizona: "I do."

Callie: "I love you, too."

And at that, Callie & Arizona fans around the world went into wild jubilation.

Random thoughts:

Cristina: "Excuse me, little… doctor boy." Enough said.

I feel like when things are good again, AZ reverts to her old habit of internalizing any issues and bearing everything with a perky grin.  The fact that she just got over the lack of support from Callie without properly addressing is a prime example.   I feel like that the issue of Callie not reciprocating the support has not been resolved.  I wonder if this issue will come back to haunt them down the road.

Why is it that we get Mark/Lexie and Mer/Der kisses, and even a Cristina/Jackson kiss but we don't get a Calllie/Arizona kiss on the lips in an Arizona-centric episode?

I find myself chuckling at the gratuitous shirtless scenes of Alex the Marsupial. Guess they need to cater to the Karev fans.  I did find myself a little moved by Alex's speech, though, that he couldn't go home or find Izzie, and that holding the baby was the one thing he could do. Speaking of which, it looks like they are setting up Alex to go into Peds?

So to justify Reed's presence at the hospital, they're making her pine for Karev? Oh please.

Bailey: "Take off your shirt."

Alex: "What? No, take off your shirt!"

Heh heh, Bailey's expression…"Out!  Out!"

Once again, superb choice of soundtrack for this episode.

Phew, that was a long one!  Until next week!

I guess prime time tv + lesbian kiss = not a good idea..
Well obviously i would desperately want to see them kiss. Like a proper kiss. I'm dying to see it.. :) :)
Oh well, some viewers dont like it :(
    Totally love this episode..
The last scene was simply wonderful!

    Great review (:

  • Admin

    Thanks, Wendy!

Flash Forward, which si also on ABC, has a lesbian regular character now, who kissed date on the show recently. It's not so much the network, it seems.

  • wendy

    Hopefully we'll see more kissings?
Since Shonda did tweeted sth abt them kissing (:

I have high expectations for this ep and to be perfectly honest, while I was watching it for the first time, I felt we were short-changed a little with the promised Az-centre episode. Having watched it again (And again and again and again .... well, you get the picture) I still feel the editing could have been handled better and the transitions for the key Az scenes could have been made smoother. One thing stood out though; JCap did not waste a single microsecond given to her. She didn't just act out what Az was feeling; she made you feel it. And we, the audience, have been torn, confused, scared, bewildered, heartbroken, overjoyed and in-love, along with her every step of the way.

All in all, I am grateful for the breakthroughs achieved so far (esp with this ep) re: lesbian relationships. Yes, we sleep in the same bed as our girlfriends! Yes, we have arguments re: issues too! Yes, we kiss and hold hands and make love! This is part of these characters' lives and it needed to be told.

I'm glad the show/network are taking risks regarding this, however we still have a long way to go. That being said, Imma just list some things that I think were sacrificed to make Cal/Az more palatable to the general public (and to think casual sex, infidelity, abuse are being more tolerated and curtailed less... *sigh, we still have a long way to go..)

    1) For a couple who subconsciously held hands and were practically joined at the hip the last ep, it seems highly unlikely that Cal/Az would be sleeping in the same bed but on almost opposite ends. I mean, c'mon!!! They will just be sleeping!!! (Look back at previous eps of Cal/George, Cal/Mark, Cal/Erica... Cal is very touchy with her partners; I could hardly believe she wouldn't at least be spooning Az when they are sleeping together. To have her on the edge of the bed and Az on the opposite end is just not like her at all)

    2) A peck on the cheek? What are they, sorority sisters? Lexie got a real liplock, and its not even necessary! Even Jackson got to plant a steamy one on Christina!

    3) No hugs of comfort? Really? Even when your gf is breaking down in front of you, crying her heart out from a terrible loss you knew and she has openly expressed from the beginning? I really find that hard to comprehend...

Ahh... well. Despite the things I listed above, this ep showed more positive things than negative, so Imma let it slide for now. I will even ignore the deliberate cutting of the head-on-shoulder scene in lieu of the powerful fade out "i-love-you-too".

Again, excellent review Meg. As always, every scene carefully analyzed and summarized in a logical and well-organized manner. :)

    PS

Oh, and this one cracked me up to no end: "Excuse me, little...doctor boy."

    Classic Yang. :D LOLZ!

  • Admin

Thanks for your comments, Xam. Yeah, I agree with you that the ep left some things to be desired. Your point about "casual sex, infidelity, abuse are being more tolerated and curtailed less" cannot be more true. Sigh indeed.

About the sleeping thing.. let's pretend that they were spooning and just rolled apart in the middle of the night. Or maybe AZ shoved her over b/c of her snoring. :silly:

While I am disappointed with the lack of physical contact, I'm still elated over the amount of screen time they got, considering AZ is a new character and got a "-centric" ep before the other original ones. I think we oughta be mighty grateful for that.

  • wendy

Hahaha i like this "What are they, sorority sisters?"
    :D

  • Xam

Hahaha! :) If THAT HOT woman was my girlfriend, even with other people there in the breakfast soiree, I'd say my goodbyes with a searing kiss and a not-so-subtle frisk... (naughty thoughts naughty thoughts go away... LOLZ! :P)

I really liked your review :cheer: . I too agree that Callie should have definitely hugged Arizona when they were standing outside. I understand (but do not like) that the network feels they need to be cautious or whatever, but I really think they could have allowed a hug...I mean I think even strangers may have hugged in that situation. While I definitely think there is still a ways to go-especially in terms of physical contact- I absolutely LOVED this episode. Jessica Capshaw (and Sara Ramirez) did a great job, and I loved the storyline being so central around them. I adore Callie and Arizona and was so happy after seeing this episode. :) I'm really glad that they're involving Arizona more in the season. This was my fave episode thus far, and I can't wait to see what happens with them!

  • Admin

    Hi there! Thanks!

Yeah, I find it incredibly odd that there was no hug, because it's not like they have not hugged multiple times before. Did the writing not call for a hug? I'm just befuddled.

  • Bre

Lovely review! As always, Meg, you made me laugh and nod emphatically. Especially, when you described the race to the OR

I too was literally yelling for Callie to hug her in the post-surprise scene. Both that scene and the "tell me I'm great scene" seemed just... wrong. I would bet you even the actresses would say as much. I must give both ladies credit for making up for these deficiencies with their fantastic facial expressions/acting ability.

I found Callie's narrowed eyes/grumbly noise after Az says she doesn't do birthday's especially funny. I know one of the first things

I usually find out about someone I am dating is when their birthday is so either that is just an indication of a failure on Callie's part or shotty writing. I want to believe the latter since she seems so into Az.

I am willing to bet that we would see the normal amount of physical affection that a couple would display were it not for the network. I always get the idea that they think they are poking a stick in the public's eye if a lesbian couple shows affection for each other. (hence the TV-MA rating that this episode got) I want to know what the ratio of viewers they've gained because of this story line vs. the viewers they've lost. I bet it is in our favor.

I was expecting them to be closer to each other while sleeping in the opening scene but I know I usually migrate to one side of the bed as well so at least there was some kind of realism there. *shrug* Loved how Az shoved Callie off the bed. I guess she's hard to wake... It was adorable though.

I wanted to smack Nosedive and Dr. Vanessa Willams in their respective gobs when they were being all smirky and rude during Az's peds rotation speech. I can't say the same about Christina even if she did do the gross out puke finger in the mouth.

They really did surprise me with how much depth they gave Az but what did not surprise me is JCap's handling of the material. She was truly a star, all twinkly and shiny. She managed to look tired/at the end of her rope for the whole episode while taking us through all of the tough emotions. I love that she finally told the chief where to go... as in out of her O.R. She owned that scene.

I was a bit afraid that they were not going to tie up the Callie/Az story line there at the end but I was so happy when they did that I ended up launching myself off the couch in celebration and high fiving Sammy. I believe we were both squealing and may have broken Sammy's husbands head with our jubilation.

The song was perfect (I just wish I could find it somewhere)and you are so right about the look that Az gave Callie, Meg. It was splendid and so emotive. Again, Sara proved that she is a lovely comedic actress with her defective noise maker and the "really". It was JCap's delivery of the first I love you that made the episode for me. Then Sara and her amazing changing facial expression... ahhhh, so fantastic! At first I wasn't sure about the fade out but I have since decided that the subtle nature that it gave the scene at the end was gold.

    In short: YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY

Love that Az finally let Callie know how she was feeling. That was a long time coming. JCap has been playing it so well that you know she is brimming with that in previous episodes but here was the perfect time for it to come to a head.

Hopefully, by the end of this season we will actually get to see one of those illusive kisses. I hope they make it without any large derailing type bumps in the road. Alas... it is TV.

  • Admin

Thanks, Bre! Glad it made you laugh..

Squealing, eh? I seem to recall you previously saying that you weren't the squealing type. ;) So that's what it takes, huh?

P.S. That song at the end, called "Everything, All At Once" by Correatown, is on iTunes.

  • Bre

I am sad to say that I did succumb to the squealing. I don't think I hit quite the pitch that the Twilight fan girls do but yes, I think one of those telling noises did issue from my person. I've decided to just own it. :D

Really?! I looked for it on ITunes right after the show aired and I could not find it anywhere! Hmm... were they hiding it from me or was I search bar challenged that day. Thanks to you and Alyssa for pointing that it is there.

  • Bre

Yes, that totally wasn't there last Thursday. Should have kept checking back. Yay!

  • Admin

Actually, you weren't the only one who didn't find it the first time. Heh.

Glad to see we are comparable in our level of obsessiveness.

  • Admin

LOL at the "one of those telling noises did issue from my person".

Well, if they actually have a prolonged kiss on-screen, I can't promise that I won't squeal like a Twilight fangirl.

  • Bre

I am also glad that our obsession is in the same league. However, I am jealous that you actually checked back and found that they had put it on ITunes. I was a bad Calzona fan girl! I guess that should say something about me.

If they actually get a kiss comparable to what Lexie and Mark got to do this week, casual and loving, I think it will be the squeal heard round the world. 5 news (or insert your local news channel here) will be out trying to figure out what this new lesbian communication tool is and the government will try to harness it for warfare purposes.

Power to the Calzona Pink Ladies.

...my brain is a mysterious place.

  • Alyssa

The song is called Everything, All At Once by Correatown. You can get it on iTunes.

  • anonymous2

I love Callie and Arizona together, but I agree with you all. It totally sucks that they are not portrayed as an intimate couple.I don't know if it's just me, but it seems as if Sara Ramirez is uncomfortable acting with Jessica Capshaw. Maybe that's why she never hugged her in the scene, because you always hear that actors improvise in scenes, but not her. Maybe it's the not feeling comfortable part that makes the acting intimate difficult, which is sad.

Or it could just be the editing and the writers making it seem that way.If it is, I hope they have a very good reason for doing it, cause it is frustrating to us Calzona fans to see them this way!

But I totally loved the episode despite the problems with it. Jessica Capshaw is an amazing actress and adding her to the cast was the best decision they could have made!My heart melted when I heard the "I Love you's"!!

  • wendy

Hmm i don't think Sara Ramirez is uncomfortable with Jessica Capshaw.
They did have a good kissing scene in 5.20 :D

Agree with you! Is pretty frustrating to watch sometimes

  • Admin

Hi there! Thanks for your post.

I don't think Sara is uncomfortable with Jessica. At least she and JCap are touchy-feely in real life (judging by the picture in the top right hand corner of the two of them together at the wrap party).

I have no doubt that quite a bit of the physical contact gets cut out, be it a shortened scene or the contact being out the range of the shot.

Wish I were a crew member on their set. :)

  • Jade

    Wonderful review as always!

"I have to say that Jessica Capshaw has one of the most expressive sets of eyes in the business. Brava to Jessica for her nuanced performance that did justice to such a complex character as Arizona."

    - I completely agree. And i think this was especially noticeable in this week's episode. Jessica Capshaw basically BECAME Arizona. And the final "i love you" scene? For me, it was the way AZ looked at Callie that made it seem so genuine and sweet. There was a kind of certainty in the way she said it, its definitely one of the best "I love you" moments on tv for sure.

And I'm glad you brought up the issue of reciprocity. I, too, think that the problem still hasn't been properly addressed. Arizona's right, she's helped Callie through "crisis after crisis", and yet Callie hasn't really been reciprocating the support.

Arizona knows exactly what Callie needs in times of crisis - be it a hug or a simple reality test. And yet Callie decided to invite a BUNCH of people to her apartment and throw AZ a surprise party on a day like that. Arizona was practically crumbling inside throughout the episode...the fact that the usual self-confident Arizona would need some reassurance from Callie should be a strong indication that Arizona's not being her usual self today. And you expect her to smile and put up her perky front at a surprise party? And that scene outside their apartment! Seriously? Not even a HUG??

I love Callie and Arizona together. But I'm worried that this issue is gonna come back and haunt them. Sometimes i get the feeling that Arizona loves Callie more than Callie loves her...or maybe it's cause Arizona knows how to "protect the things she love", and Callie doesn't (yet).

This is a tv drama, and something's gonna happen to them somewhere down the road. For some reason, I have a feeling that Arizona might be the one who's gonna end up getting hurt. Arizona has a rather strict moral compass, so I doubt she's gonna cheat on Callie anytime soon (besides, i doubt ABC would want to introduce ANOTHER lesbian character into the show :s ). JCap pointed out in her TVGuide interview that "Callie could find another guy or girl" since "her playing field is vast."... I really hope Callie's not gonna do anything silly and break AZ's heart. :(

  • wendy

I will seriously faint and cry my eyes out if Callie finds a new guy/girl. I might die from shock :(
    I hope it doesnt happen..

  • Admin

Thanks, Jade! I agree with the points you made.

It does feel like that AZ loves her more than the other way around, but I am willing to give Callie the benefit of the doubt that she's still getting over her past hurts and only slowly and cautiously opening up again.

Great point about AZ knowing how to "protect the things she love" and Callie doesn't yet. The key is that I hope we see progress from Callie.

I can't help but wonder if the writers are deliberate in leaving out any sort of resolution to the reciprocity issue. If they were to have a temporary break-up (heaven forbid) down the road, I can see this being a legitimate cause, rather than cheating from either one of them. Of course, that is assuming the writers are logical to begin with.

But yeah, at this rate, I believe AZ will be the one with the bigger heartbreak should anything bad happen to their relationship.

  • Jade

Good point. If somehow the writers insist on temporarily breaking up the couple, i hope it would be because of this issue and not some sort of cheating.

With the end result of Callie finally learning how to love Arizona and a happily ever after for the both of them! :P

As much as I wish that Callie and Arizona would be more intimate, I can't help, but still be really excited after this past episode. I definitely agree with your review...Jessica Capshaw killed it :) . I don't think the "no touching" thing is an intimacy thing on Sara Ramirez's part, or on Callie's. I'd probably have to say it's an intimacy thing on the network's part :s I really hope these two last...I think-no, I know- my heart will be crushed if they don't.I love Callie and hope that she begins to reciprocate more for Arizona, but I really do think she's trying. Oh, and I know it's probably not going to happen, but I just wish the network would take Cristina Yang's advice from that one episode a while back and "live and let live." Callie and Arizona are in love. It's okay if they show it :cheer:

  • Chloe

Not to reply to my own comment haha, but I may or may not be watching there scenes together on youtube...repeatedly :P

  • Chloe

Wow.. I definitely meant their haha. Okay. Now I'm done replying to my own comment lol.

  • Admin

    LOL, Chloe!

Yeah, I'm sure it has more to do with the editors and the network than the actors. I think it's safe to say that they will last for the rest of this season (per Shonda), but to her, next season's probably fair game (eek!). Because in Grey's land, no couple has remained together continuously from season to season. :s

The way they are depicting the couple (so Mer/Der-like), I really think they are the endgame for each other, even if they have temporary break-ups and such. :X

Just saw this tweet. Meg, I fought the urge to squeal... only because my roommate is home and he would run in here and give me a pitying look when he discovered the source of my pleasure.

    "shondarhimes

But I can say this: I just watched some very cute Callie Arizona kissing in a cut of an upcoming episode..."

OMG!! That made me gasp!!! :woohoo:

Guess I'll have to do as I have pledged and get ready to squeal.

Does that mean it's during the holiday ep? I think they just finished shooting that one???

  • Bre

That is the only ep I can imagine it is from. I tweeted her back. I think my heart jumped for a second there. Get ready to squeal, my friend.

  • Jade

OMG! That tweet alone made me squeal! (and i'm not usually the squealing type either *ahem* )

  • Wendy

    I am so happy now

  • Bre

Jade, I am afraid that we will all be converted to squealers by the end of this season.

  • Bre

I think we're all going to be converted to squealers by the end of this season.

  • Tristan

I think a lot of people get down on Callie about not hugging Arizona. I don't think it has anything to do with Sara Ramirez in the afterellen interview I believe she requested this story line. Also if you think back about Callie we have never seen her in a good relationship. She told George to soon she loved him, he never said it back. With Erica when thy decided to explore their relationship she told Erica that she got clingy when she liked someone. And even further back when Denny died and she went to Merideth's to cook. She told Finn that doctors were not good at relationships. They went to school for so lon they never really matured they were like 17 year olds. And she was like the weird girl at the back of the class who chewed their hair. She also told Mark her dad took care of everything so she could focus on work. So she really is not used to being with someone in a real relationship. Callie probably acts a little standoffish with Arizona because she's scared after everything that has happened to her. She doesn't want to scare Arizona off. We need to give Callie the benifit of the doubt. And I can't wait for the kissing.

oh dear... i did a bit of a fistg in the air "YAY!" type thing when i read that tweet.

i am now my worst nightmare haha. i' THAT girl lol

  • Bre

Don't worry you are very much among a troop of "that" girls.

I hope you're right and they do end up together :) I definitely think you're right about their relationship having some dysfunction...I don't think it would be possible for them to be okay the whole time on a show like Grey's haha. I wish that weren't the case though :s . Let's just cross our fingers that it's not quite to the extent of the Mer/Der thing. I don't know if I can do that again haha.

  • Chloe

Oops I forgot to type my name in :P I promise I'll eventually get the hang of this haha.

  • Bre

That I realize now was already posted to the main site. Sorry Meg...

  • wendysi-@hotmail.com

    I can't wait for the kiss (: (:
    HAHAHA!!
    Now i'm so excited :D

  • wendy

oops i just type my email for my name :/

  • anonymous2

Now I can't wait!!!!!! Bre you just made my day hehe! Finally something we've all been waiting for. Callie deserves to be happy after all that she has been through.
I think I've just become my own nightmare too...haha

  • Bre

Glad I could make your day! I know Shonda made mine when she posted that to her Twitter. I kind of like this slow build up now.

  • Jazz

I know wat u mean Bre... i was like "man can't they just be all lovey already!" haha but good things come to those who wait it seems!!!!!

it makes it all that much sweeter whe we get it cos we had to wait for it and now appreciate it more. i think we need to give the writers more credit haha

  • Jade

Jazz and Bre: I agree with what you're saying as well. Good things come to those who wait! :)

Someone mentioned on another website that its hard not to like Arizona and Callie because they're all about companionship, understanding and love and that's something everyone could relate to.

Another self-proclaimed right winger also stated that the show has successfully converted him to liking Calzone, which is huge.

I think its quite an achievement that the creators have managed to convert so many people into AZ/Calzone fans. Most of the comments I've seen are about how AZ rocked this episode! And that makes me happy

And yes, I am obsessed. :silly:

  • Bre

I guess it is natural for us to be impatient. We have gone so long without be equally represented in mainstream media but in this case I think we're a rushing a good thing and it might just makes us appreciate it less. So yeah... slow and easy is going to win the race this time. IMO

Wow, where was this? Calzona have really started to win over a tough crowd. I am impressed. Go Sara and Jessica, go writers, and Go Shonda! Thanks for posting that.

  • Jade

I totally know what you mean, Bre. It can be really frustrating sometimes, and its true that we still have a long way to go. I guess this sort of thing takes time, but for now, im just glad gay and lesbian couples are beginning to get some good storylines on prime time tv. And hey, at least we have that cute little Calzona kiss scene to look forward to ;)

I found the second comment on the EW website: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20318107,00.html

This is what the poster said:
"Love Callie and Arizona. It takes some good writing and actors to make a right-winger like me root for a couple of lesbians, haha, but I am." he goes on to talk about Christina/Owen/Jackson but that's beside the point :P

And i dont remember where i found the other comment

  • Admin

Thanks for sharing that, Jade. It gives me hope.

Imagine how much more quickly the tide will turn if only people were exposed to quality gay/lesbians storylines on a more consistent basis.

  • Admin

I see the effects that Shonda's tweet has had on us -
mass conversion into squealers, putting the email in the name field or forgetting to input the name, double-posting links... ;)

Our Calzona obsession has reached new heights! Love it! You guys are awesome.. :D

  • Bre

Shonda knows how to confound the ladies. :woohoo:

Shonda's latest tweet (except for the one where she said YAY!):

"Another Monday. Lots to do this week. This is the period of the season when we have to rush post to get shows on the air..."

No C/A news but let us hope that rushing the post pro. doesn't work out ill in our favor. :D

  • Chloe

I hope it doesn't...I'm going to be a very sad girl if that kissing scene is cut :( .

I refuse that that is an option though. That is not an option. Nope. NOT an option.

Sorry for the over emphasis :silly: :side:

  • Admin

If that scene ends up being cut, I will sign up for a Twitter account just to give Shonda a piece of my mind.

  • Bre

Oh, she will hear about it if that scene gets cut. I think she knows full well what can of worms she opened with that tweet. In essence she promised something without actually promising... it's interesting.

  • Bre

Cruising around Spoiler TV and saw the poll for Invest In Love. An overwhelming majority of people said the episode was Awesome. 448 to be exact... There were very few Poor or Awful votes. Just thought that it was kind of neat.
