My Review of 6.06 - "Nobody Saw Anything!" E-mail

Grey's numbers were up from last week and won the night (CSI was a re-run). Still, it's encouraging that the show has done relatively well so far this season.  Read on for my full review.

First of all, the writers deserve some credit for deviating from their usual format. Some people really liked it; I found it to be all right. I watch Grey's for the interaction between the characters, the relationships (okay, relationship), and the humor, not so much for the patient cases. That's merely my personal preference. So naturally, the whodunit medical mystery did not appeal as much to me as it would to some people. Plus, I did not find it to be suspenseful enough, and finding out that it was April did not make a difference to me.  Plus, it's hard to enjoy an episode when I'm constantly distracted by my annoyance with these Mercy West people (especially when the same scene was replayed 3x from different angles).

On a side note,  and this has nothing with do with quality of the writing or the new format, I'm not a big fan of burn patients - they are little graphic, which makes me queasy (clearly, I'm not in the medical profession).

By far the best moments of the episode were the scenes with Arizona/Mark/Lexie.

In the first one, when AZ looked up from her patient at Mark and Lexie's little tete-a-tete with the smelling Q-tip, I could imagine her thinking, "What the hell is this…are you kidding me?"  And AZ's right. Maybe Mexie fans found the protectiveness adorable, but come on, stop babying her!  Ugh! It was a little nauseating.

The hushed and serious tone JCap used when AZ calmly told Lexie to get out of the room to get it together was perfect.  And really, AZ couldn't care less if her boyfriend's standing right there.

And boy did Lexie take a long moment - she just decided not to return to her patient. First of all, what was she thinking? I can only imagine how difficult burn cases are (and which I would avoid like a plague), so I understand her reaction if she hasn't been exposed (no pun intended) to one. But running from her fears and abandoning the patient is inexcusable; if she couldn't handle it, at least have the nerve (again, no pun intended, I swear!) to tell Mark/AZ so they can get someone else to help instead of waiting for her return. That was completely unprofessional. Sorry, but people who behave without any accountability irk me. To her credit, though, Lexie did make things right in the end.

I love that Arizona cannot tolerate weakness, incompetence, or unprofessionalism.  At this rate, she'll single-handedly whip all of Seattle Grace into shape. The list of people she has reprimanded/had a yelling match with so far - Bailey, Cristina, Mark, Lexie… I suspect the list will expand. Arizona may be the sweetest and most pleasant person at the hospital, but you better not get on her bad side.

With Arizona, she seems to be forgiving if someone makes an effort to do something and screws up (i.e. that Dr. who almost cut off the newborn's arm while doing the C-section, when Mark questioned if she just wasn't paying attention, AZ seemed annoyed by his comment and she responded with some exasperation that "She made a mistake.")  She's less forgiving when it comes to  people who don't even try.

When AZ finally tracked Lexie down..

Arizona: "What the hell are you doing?"

Lexie: "I have to sit with him 'til his dad comes. I left him alone."

Arizona: "No! You left him!....Come here!  <approaches a nearby woman> Hey, can you sit with him 'til his dad comes? Thanks."

Arizona: "You left him alone... When you were planning to - "

Lexie:  "I'm sorry, I'm sorry..I just, I feel like..."

Arizona: "You don't get to feel anything, because he is feeling everything. HIs every nerve is exposed, and raw, and we have to make him feel worse before he's going to feel better. So if you are having feelings, then you need to shut them down. You need to shut them down and talk to him about his future, and remind him that he has one, past all of this pain, and if you can't do that, if you can't do your job, then you find someone who can and you send them to me!"

Is there anything hotter than an intense and pissed-off Arizona? … I didn't think so, either.

What a fireworks display! We have never seen AZ so agitated before, even if you just pay attention to her gesticulation.  Everything from the flick of her arm when she beckoned Lexie to "come here" to her abrupt stop when she asked the lady to look after the kid to her storming down the hall in a huff was forceful.  Amazing attention to detail by Jessica. It's like she and her character morphed into one.  Jessica's acting has been phenomenal of late (amazing what having good material to work with can do, non?)  The delivery of her lecture was perfect; it was not overdone and just the right amount of furious without crossing the line into unrealistic or unprofessional (or even comical) territory.  She doesn't get a lot to work with, but boy does she do a lot with every little bit she's given. I applaud her.

Continuing with the "good man in a storm" motif, Arizona is once again unflappable in a crisis (and appears to be one of the few at Seattle Grace). I guess this is the only way to cope with being in Peds all the time - she just shuts down emotionally.  But as we know, Arizona suffers from nightmares, which could be a result of her not dealing with her feelings properly.  I wonder if they will explore that further? Not having an outlet for her feelings has manifested in nightmares.  There is a price to pay for being the pillar of strength for everyone around her all the time. Hope she will learn to lean on Callie in time.  It would be great if this culminates in some interesting storyline for AZ on the show.

And what is up with Lexie? Her overly bubbly nature (not to be confused with Arizona's perkiness, which is endearing) could be grating at times (though she makes me laugh sometimes), but at least she was usually competent.  The merger has reduced her to a tearful bumbling wreck (who is not above reading a stolen diary).  If she is supposed to be the "Grey" of Grey's Anatomy if/when Ellen Pompeo moves on, then they are setting themselves up for failure. Her character has been written so one-dimensionally that there's no way that she can carry the show. Now Arizona, on the other hand…

So April (I barely remember her name) got fired. April seemed to be the most sincere person of the 4 MWers and the least insufferable. Would've preferred if it were Reed instead, but the actress playing Reed didn't signed onto another show. A shame…

Farewell, April. I hardly knew ye.

The Chief was awfully smug and self-congratulatory over finding the one who was "responsible", wasn't he? He has to be the most deluded person in that hospital.  Good of Derek to point out the underlying problem. Wonder if this will be revisited in the upcoming eps or if the SGH and MW residents will magically start bonding on their own. I predict the latter.

Random thoughts:

Arizona's ponytail makes an appearance, along with her lavender stethoscope from last season that I had grown attached to.

Nice to see confident Callie taking charge of the ER.

Cristina's karate chop was funny, but was there really no time for the paddles or just done for dramatic effect? Sheesh.

Was Reed's expression upon her realization the creepiest face you've ever seen? Her eyes disturbed me to no end.

Until next week!

i definitely agree. arizona is one heck of an actress. :)

however, i like the episode as a whole. it`s new and different. and almost all characters have same screen time. alex and lexie irritated me all throughout the show.

it seems that this season will have episodes where a character will be more focused than others. we already have izzy and callie. then episode 7 will be derek and episode 8 will be arizona (that is as far as all spoilers i`ve read). what do you think? i`m just excited for episode 8.

  • wendy

Me tooooooo! I'm really excited for episode 8.
Next episode seems interesting too!! (:

  • Loraine

I'm really looking forward to episode 8. I hope there will be more Calzona interaction. They didn't have a scene together in this episode. I like it when Arizona is yelling. Jessica brings it extremely well.

LOL, Loraine! I totally agree about Arizona/Jessica yelling.

Excellent review, as always! (you've got all the little details in, esp. the ponytail and the lavender steth! I love that! :) )

I know I shouldn't be sulking but between too little Arizona and (-) Cal/Az interaction so there... sulking and pouting almost the entire weekend! *Damn, and its gonna be Mon again tomorrow! How many more days until the Az-centric ep again? *sigh*

I actually liked the format this week; it has been a refreshing change of pace from the usual Grey's monologue at the beginning and end of the show. Reminded me a lot of ER though. Which in turn, reminded me of Kim Legaspi, which made me sulk even more. *sigh

Thanks, Xam! I'm suffering from Cal/Az withdrawal, too. Hopefully there'll be more of them to write about in the upcoming eps. I keep hoping that maybe the Derek-centric storyline may be interspersed with some Cal/Az scenes? (maybe I shouldn't be so optimistic - I'll just get my hopes up) :s

I'm going to be lame and ask how we know AZ has nightmares?

  • Admin

Hi kmack432! In the 2nd episode after AZ showed up in season 5 ("Sympathy for the Devil";), she and Alex were on the plane to pick up the liver for Jackson. Alex got annoyed that AZ appeared insensitive about that boy from whom they harvested the organ, and that she was all relationships and rainbows and crap, to which AZ replied that it does affect her and that she sees little coffins in her sleep.

Does anyone else see that they have "rotated" the clip when Az come's to fins Lexie, the first part. As you can see on the pictures in this review, Az bang is at one side the first moment, and then when she's in the hall yelling at Lexie the bangs is on the other side...
