Grey's continued do well in the ever coveted 18-49 group. For the 3rd straight week, it beat the competition in that age range.  Read on for my review.  As I'm sure you have noticed, my reviews are focused on Calzona. I figured that there are enough reviews out there by others on the entire episode and all the other characters.

Here I was, having adjusted my expectations going into a heavy Meredith/Lexie/Thatcher episode, only to be pleasantly surprised by what the writers gave us in terms of Callie & Arizona interaction. Aside from Lexie's outburst of "GIVE ME MY DAD!!!", they actually managed to keep the melodrama at a tolerable level.  I didn't mind Izzie in the past 2 eps, either. Maybe the short hair makes her seem less whiny.  The bear (aka deer) scenes, especially when it was Izzie's turn were HI-larious.  And "Shadow Shepherd's" back, only creepier than before, but it's really Cristina's fault because she decided to "whore herself out for surgeries".  Ah… Cristina..after Callie & Arizona, I watch the show for you.

The best parts of the episode for me, naturally, were the Calzona scenes. Not only did they finally touched for the first time this season, they actually had a real conversation!

The bench in the park scene was well done. It's the first time that Callie and Arizona had a serious discussion without anyone storming off in the middle of it. When Arizona rebuffed Callie's list, I was a little taken aback initially, but it makes total sense to me after thinking about it a little more. From the first scene in the natal unit (or whatever the correct term is - clearly, I do not belong in this field), it's apparent that Callie had been stalling for days and days and Arizona had been patient with her, even role-playing as Chief (which would've been funny had they included that scene) to humor her.

AZ was clearly a little miffed that Callie kept putting off day after day on her intention to ask the Chief for her job back.  When AZ got annoyed and started to pack up after Callie started rattling off her "list of 50 reasons" (one of which was being able to stay in the OR for 7 hrs without needing to pee - really, Callie? Do you think you will be taken seriously if you said that??), which in turn made Callie a little angry, I was glad to see AZ pointing out that everyone's affected by the merger and basically saying that Callie should just get it over with. Even better was that Callie actually listened intently to what AZ had to say, which is a far cry from last season, when she wouldn't even give the time of day to AZ's opinion.  And when Callie said "I'm sorry..", I almost thought she was being sarcastic and was about to lash out and run away, but I was pleasantly surprised that she was sincere. I like that AZ is able to keep Callie in check when she gets too self-involved, and AZ is more open in sharing her problems/feelings instead of always being the strong one. Wow, their relationship has really grown; they actually communicate and able to have an honest and mature conversation.

On a shallower note, everyone's talking about the head-on-shoulder goodness, but after re-watching (I lost count how many times) the scene, I am convinced that they were also holding hands at that moment. You'll see right before AZ says "He'll say yes, or he'll say no", she scooted closer and her left arm appeared to reach for something (the same time Callie looks down). Then as she says "And then we'll know", you could see Callie's arm at an angle that could only imply that her hand is in AZ's lap. Damn camera close-up cut off the bottom part of the shot. Grrr! Then when we see them from behind, you can see clearly that Callie's left arm is in AZ's lap as she lowers her head onto her shoulder.  See, if the shot actually showed AZ grabbing Callie's hand, it would've communicated a more romantic vibe. However, I'm happy that they finally touched (and the sky did not fall - imagine that?!)  So hopefully, next episode, we'll graduate to a hug, then a kiss later on? Baby steps to acclimatize the masses…

Yeah yeah, it's obsessive, but when physical contact is hard to come by, can you blame me for overanalyzing every scene?

Is it weird that I find it incredibly cute that Jessica/Arizona kept chewing away throughout that serious discussion with Callie, even though she had stopped putting food in her mouth long ago?

Other random thoughts:

The look that AZ gave Callie when she said that being a surgeon was overrated was priceless. Looked at Callie like she has lost her mind or something.

I really like their outfits - kudos to the wardrobe department. Not feeling Callie's "frazzled" hair look, though. Maybe it was done to reflect her state of mind…hum..

AZ called her "Calliope Torres"… ahhh, like music to my ears.

I really enjoyed Callie's scene with the Chief at the end, when she decided against asking for her job back.  It once again goes to show Callie's decency of being able to think about someone else other than herself. And that's why I think she and AZ are a good match; they are such headstrong characters with good hearts.

Hope to see Callie & Arizona be integrated with the rest of the cast more. They don't hang out with anyone else outside of the hospital!

How come AZ has a grey stethoscope now? I like the cute lavender one from last season.

It's nice that they are throwing around the term "girlfriend" in every scene, but let us see them acting more like they are, please?  The bench scene was a good start, though..

I liked that Derek left Meredith to make the decision on her own and was never overbearing (I'm looking at you, Mark!)

Cristina (the "expired" meat) to Izzie: "Just making sure everything's running smoothly here. And..it is.. Kudos."  Oh, and the "I can be hardcore in anything you want." to "Shadow Shepherd". Bwahaha!

And yes, I have that bench scene as my desktop wallpaper right now.

(pardon the delayed comment; I initially intended to exercise cautious optimism re: this lovely couple, but after last night's episode, I think I just threw all caution to the wind! ;)

Let me begin by quoting one clause you have written in your review that I really love and can definitely relate to:

"Yeah yeah, it's obsessive, but when physical contact is hard to come by, can you blame me for overanalyzing every scene?"

There are only a few admirable lesbian characters on tv and in movies, and sadly, even a smaller percentage of those are given gems of material to work with. I think what is even more depressing is oftentimes, the actresses that play those parts doesn't have in them the emotional investment to make the character connect to the audience, convey the message that they are supposed to be conveying.

Jessica and Sara, bless their hearts, belong to the opposite end of the spectrum. (I will admit my inherent bias here, as the wonderful Jessica Capshaw has captured my heart since day 1). Here are some of the subtle things I have noticed which has made me appreciate their gift more:

    > how they are able to effectively use facial expressions, eye movements, head and arm gestures to convey emotions despite lack of dialogue and screen time (check the stairway kiss again)

    > how they are able to say a thousand words with brief pauses, covert looks and smiles and slight gasps of breath (check the 1st kiss in the bar bathroom, the confirmation of the gf status and the scene at the park bench)

:-) So, see. You are not alone in this "obsession"! :-) I personally find it cute and adorable; let the multitude of other obsess with the other pairings! LOLZ!

Great observations! Jessica and Sara are 2 people who manage to pull a thousand different facial expressions depending on what the scenes call for. That's why I love replaying their scenes b/c each time, I notice something new.

I have an example as well - in ep 5.22, the one where Callie ran off during their date and AZ kept going after her the next day, during their last conversation when Callie finally confessed what was bothering her, AZ's eyes went from expressing anger, to confusion, to sympathy, to adoration (when Callie said "last night was going to be our night";). It was unbelievable to watch.

I distinctly remember that scene! :) Yeah, you said so succintly! Both of them, JCap especially as she was gifted with the ability to control subtle facial expressions to a T! I don't think that girl can lie through her teeth as every sinew of her muscle would give her away in seconds (but then again, she is a great actress, so I rest my case)

    I am hopelessly addicted! :)

Great review and great comments you guys. You have captured just about everything that went through my mind. I have often thought about the fact that some of the scenes in which the actors might have a harder time are when they are wearing surgical masks and don't have much more to work with facially other than their eyes.

I cheer any time JC has a scene in surgery because of the way she emotes with her eyes. I feel like we are getting to know Arizona just through JC's face and that is indicative of fantastic talent.

As for SR the way she uses her body in scenes is lovely. It clearly says what attitude she is expressing in that moment. I also like how she uses indistinct noises to communicate bewilderment or frustration.

I agree about the wardrobe and Callie's hair. I like red on her usually but in combination with the hair it somehow struck out. I love that they really utilize certain pieces of wardrobe on this show, like Callie's leather jacket or AZ's coat. They tend to find awesome colors for both characters to wear. They are so lucky that JC looks awesome in attending scrubs. They make those eyes pop.

I too was getting frustrated when they were using that medium close up shot. I kept praying for a mid shot just so we could see what was happening below the midsection. Seeing as we've just praised their facial acting ability I don't blame them for staying on that shot until they transitioned to the long shot of them on the bench with the head/shoulder cuteness. I did love the framing of the shot from the back of the bench out.

I too obsessively watched the scene over and over to game out what was going on in the hand department. Though solving the mysteries created by a slow acclimation of the masses to the evil lesbian touching is fun, I would still rather just witness it for freak's sake.

I will now end this obsessively long comment and resume writing.
