Last night's Grey's episode beat the competition in the key 18 to 49 demographic. Relieved to see a good start to the season. I've put up my full review of the episode. Just "read on"...
I had high hopes for this episode. It turned out to be okay. Not great, but not terrible, either. The beginning of the merger storyline could've been pretty good TV, but I found myself feeling somewhat bored half the time. I know they used the whole schizophrenic patient storyline as a parallel to the paranoia that everyone's feeling, but it just didn't feel compelling and felt like the writer was trying too hard to force the theme of ***paranoia*** down our throats. I, along with everyone else, was really looking forward to the Christina Peds storyline. It had great potential. And yes, there were some funny moments ("YES I WOULD" in a scary cyborg voice) but I just expected something more. But of course, those were not the biggest transgressions committed by this particular writer (whom I've yet to look up) in the episode…. which is…
.….Is anyone else flabbergasted by the Callie & Arizona subplot???
If Callie & Arizona were not "girlfriends", what the heck were they doing the last few months? Scoping out other prospects? The timeline's all warped in Shondaland, I swear.. especially since the following dialogue occurred in Season 5, episode 20, which is a whole 7 episodes ago.
"Meeting Callie's dad is so not on the agenda for the day. I mean, he seems like the kind of man who needs a little preparation before meeting his daughter's girlfriend."
Not to mention, did AZ not just tell Derek that she's involved in the last episode, AND she seemingly had a key to Callie's apartment in the season premiere? Arizona pretty much used her "girlfriend card" to pressure Callie into the 3D MRI. That all points to girlfriend status, no? Odd that AZ's not clear on it.
With that being said, I'm starting to wonder if it's a matter of semantics. Perhaps the writers should not have necessarily written in a way that implies that they weren't girlfriends before. Maybe it would've made more sense to us if they were talking more along the lines of how "serious and committed" their relationship is. It was just bizarre using the term "girlfriend", considering that AZ already said referred to the term girlfriend way back when.
So about that "I-want-to-move-Portland" scene… Poor, misguided Callie decides to apply for a job opening in Oregon. First, I thought that Callie was being a nitwit again, trying to sabotage another relationship. But I started to wonder if it was some sort of test? Then again, she actually went to the trouble of actually grabbing am armful of old files. However, when Arizona kind of went along (at least on the surface), Callie looked disappointed and hurt, screwed up her face, and walked away. If Callie's testing AZ that way, that's just cruel… I prefer straightforwardness…
Arizona looked cute when she's ran after Callie, having this child-like innocence while telling Callie about Cristina working with her in Peds.. that is until Callie did her deep chuckle (which I have grown to love so much):
"I shouldn't say anything. She's my roommate"
Wow, Callie, your loyalty to your roommate overwhelms me.
Meanwhile… in the OR...
One thing that I really admire about Arizona, which I hope doesn't change, is that she's unfailingly professional. So glad to see her put Cristina and Mark in their place when they started going on about the merger. What I enjoyed even more was her confronting Cristina:
"You know.. it's not a good idea to piss off your attending." "I don't like being used. And I like being lied to even less."
Did I mention that pissed-off Arizona = HOT? Her voice was low, husky, and intimidating as hell. She doesn't need to yell and stomp and throw up her hands like Bailey to get her point across effectively. Love it. Love HER.
I wish that the Christina Peds storyline didn't have to end badly, with Arizona feeling used. I mean, how do you rebound from that? Another one of Callie's girlfriends who does not get along with Cristina (though this time it's Cristina's own fault) I guess the three of them won't be hanging out in Callie and Cristina's apartment anytime soon (unless the writers decide to forego continuity, which would not be the first time. Ahem.)
The last scene in the kitchen...
Callie's expressions were amusing when AZ asked if she was her girlfriend… like… chuckle… shyeah..? Guess Callie had done some things to make AZ feel insecure, perhaps considering lying to parents about their relationship, or fighting with AZ over George and dismissing her opinion initially.. or the latest, talking about moving to Portland?
I found it insanely cute that Arizona immediately started bossing Callie around as soon as they defined their status. Nice to see that she's always willing to fight for those she cares about.
Now that the level of commitment in their relationship has been properly defined, onwards and upwards! I want to - no, I need to - see some meaningful interaction between them when Callie's dad shows up.
My biggest beef of the night - the lack of physical contact yet again. Heaven forbid that the two should touch!!! Is this going to be like this the whole season? Starting to feel a little disheartened.
I just came across a comment on Youtube - someone just realized that Cristina and Arizona touched more than Callie and Arizona. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.. perhaps both.
Random last thoughts:
Love AZ's hair - her curls are back!!
I want to hear AZ call her "Calliope" again.
I don't mind Lexie, and she can be funny at times, but did her bumbling self have to be in every other scene??
Next week looks like it's going to be melodrama galore surrounding the Greys. I think we need a Callie storyline involving her returning to SGH to balance it out.
Until next week! What do you guys think of the episode? Comment below! |

I agree w/ U at 100%...only 2 Calzona's scenes, what the hell?!?....we want Callie back to SGH!!!
