My Season 6 Premiere Review E-mail

So Grey's beat out the competition (including the premiere of The Office and CSI) on Thursday night. That is encouraging news! I guess with the whole hoopla about TR Knight leaving and Katherine Heigl leaving, the show generated enough buzz. It'd be nice if the ratings hold up somewhat going forward, though I am not sure, being light on Meredith and Izzie (as the Fab 4 still is the main draw for most viewers).  However, aside from introducing new characters, hopefully also means more screen time for Callie & Arizona (Yay!)

Okay, on with my thoughts on the premiere.  Since I don't want to spoil the episodes for people who have not seen it, please click "read more" below to go to my review.

Overall, I thought the passage of time concept was an effective one and a good mechanism to get the characters through the grieving process in 2 hours rather than dragging it out for half a season.

I appreciated that they treated George's passing without being too melodramatic and managed to introduce new storylines.  The whole Chief having problems with the board, Arizona getting in trouble for running expensive tests and Callie quitting and ending up at Mercy West were neatly woven together.  For once, there will be some continuity going forward.

Anyway, as a whole, it's a decent start to the season.

Alrighty then, now that we got that out of the way…moving on to what I really want to talk about (and why you are reading this in the first place) - Callie & Arizona!

After the torture of waiting 4.5 months for new Callie & Arizona scenes, I feel what we got was worth the wait.  Sure, their moments could have been extended but I really enjoyed their interaction and I sense that the relationship really has progressed in those 40 days.  I approached the new season with cautious optimism; while we have some ways to go before a gay couple will get 100% equal treatment as hetero couples, Shonda does seem to heart Callie and Arizona (as well as Sara and Jessica).  I am just happy that we got to see them interact, like the other couples on the show.

Despite the few scenes of them together, love that we got a decent amount of Callie and Arizona in their own storylines.  It's nice to know that these characters can be interesting without necessarily being together. I really enjoyed AZ's patient storyline; it really reinforces the qualities that I respect her for - her good heart and her perseverance to rectify something that is not right (also as it applies to her relationship with Callie).  We know how great an actress Sara is already, but Jessica can really hold her own and continues to impress me.  She seems to have chemistry with all the other cast members.  The "Walk Away, Karev!" was impeccably delivered.

The first scene between Callie and Arizona after George's death was a little disappointing, I have to admit.  Yes, Arizona was with a patient, but was it impossible to give her a quick hug of support?  I mean, telling her to go home and eat donuts?? I really expected AZ to be more compassionate given that she must know what it feels like to lose someone you care about.  Instead, she sounded oddly robotic. I was looking forward to seeing a tender scene between them, but oh well.  It was just.. a little bizarre.

I really enjoyed the scene with Arizona waiting for Callie in her apartment.  First of all, she has a key to Callie's place???  <big sigh of contentment>

This scene, for me, really shows that their relationship is coming along nicely just judging by the familiarity with which they interact with each other (i.e. Callie getting it out and yelling at AZ and then AZ eagerly snatching the X-ray from Callie). Most of all, the best part for me is seeing Callie support Arizona in return, which I don't believe we have seen to date.  After AZ, all crestfallen, asked, "So you didn't do it?" and Callie replied, "Of course I did, Arizona", I just melted.  I know, I'm a hopeless sap.  Oh, and the way AZ said, "Thank you" sounded like Callie's going to get some later that night (okay okay.. I'll get my mind out of the gutter now).  Also loved the way she tried to soothe AZ after she realized the X-ray didn't show anything and then proceeded to talk her through it.  Yay for equality in relationships!

I have to admit that I was a little shocked initially that Arizona smoked (tho "very very very rarely and occasionally"), but then it's actually kind of a nice twist.  AHA! So there's something more to Arizona than rainbow and sunshine and butterflies.  Now we know her how she copes with stress: smoking (kind of hot in a badass way) and donuts (not so much).  Can we add sex as another one of her coping mechanisms?  Yes, please add sex to the list.

The bar scene's really cute, too.  Arizona just could not wipe the look of adoration off her face when Callie came in and Callie was equally glowing as she started talking to her.  Awww…. This is magnified by the fact that they both looked amazing in the scene - maybe it's the clothes.  Now that JCap is a regular, thank god they can invest in her wardrobe.  I love her tops in both the kitchen and the bar scene and her hair throughout 6.02.

Okay, after the Calzona gushing, I have a little beef with Arizona's scene with Derek.  Yes, they have chemistry. But the McDreamy thing... it's almost like Arizona was eyeing Derek a little too appreciatively.  It made me… uncomfortable.  It's reminiscent of that cringe-worthy scene with Karev in 5.17 when she whispered into his ear, "You go, Karev!" and walked away.  Whoa…easy there, Jessica…  Her expression during the snippy exchange between Karev and Derek was priceless, though.

I noticed the lack of physical contact in the 2 hours.  I understand if they don't want to do anything risky in the premiere in case it turns off some folks.  However, I hope to see that remedied in a big way in the upcoming episodes as we settle into the season.

Overall, a nice start to the season for Callie & Arizona fans as these two keep getting more and more adorable (not to mention, hot!)  Can't wait for the Calzona-focused eps that are coming up!
